As he searches we learn more about him, ghosts, Irish folk lore and the accompanying prejudices and the magic mysticism of Ireland. A great, entertaining book -- funny, violent, peopled with wonderful and evil characters. You will love it.

The Prologue is set in May 1950 but is only three pages long. Though a short piece itâ€™s packed with drama as a woman is murdered while her baby son sleeps quietly in a nearby forest, hidden by great ferns. The book proper begins with chapter one set in April 1976 as a young man from Dublin named Mahony arrives in the town of Mulderrig. Now what do you think are the odds that Mr. Mahony is the baby son of that murdered woman? Right, theyâ€™re pretty good odds indeed. The reader will deduce this quickly but the folks in Mulderrig wonâ€™t catch on for a while. Mahonyâ€™s landlady, Mrs. Cauley, recruits him to help audition locals as performers in the townâ€™s Christmas play. During the auditions Mrs. Cauley sneaks in many questions about Orla Sweeney and her whereabouts, a woman who turns out to be Mahonyâ€™s missing mother. All this curiosity causes a much greater interest by the townspeople in Mahony and just what he is doing in their town. Mahony, Mrs. Cauley, and other friends begin an investigation of the various characters in Mulderrig and who might be suspects in Orlaâ€™s disappearance. Thereâ€™s even a supernatural element involved; the images of many dead citizens appear at different times to point the way. The unique charm of the Irish way of writing English prose is another enjoyable feature of this novel. Youâ€™ll have a grand time as long as you donâ€™t get banjaxed by a wayward undesirable one. Fair play to you!

I am a voracious reader but am not enthralled with every book. THIS book was great! Engaging characters and a good plot--I could hardly put it down, and have recommended to friends.If you are a lover of all things Irish, and enjoy a bit of fantasy and ghostiness, you will love this book.

This is a wonderfully entertaining book. Having driven the roads of Western Ireland myself, I could easily picture the setting of this town that isn't...where a young man coming from Dublin determines he must visit to discover what happened to his mother here.The earth, wind, deceased spirits and lively characters meet with his will to help find the truth.Cannot think of a better St Paddy's Day read than this Kindle book, just $1.99 from Amazon.

Himself is an unusual mystery as we don't know from the beginning of the book if the character "disappeared" or was murdered. After all, this is Ireland and given the history of folk tales and myths, Orla could have been taken by the fairies. Unlike many readers who have commented here, I do not think this is a wonderful read. It is not literary fiction and I knew from the start that I wasn't reading Sebastian Barry or Roddy Doyle. The story was engaging enough and the characters developed enough but I stopped reading 2/3 of the way through the novel and returned it (to Kindle). The reason? Animal cruelty and abuse that has nothing to do with the story. The author refers to drowning kittens in a bag many times throughout the novel as it pertains to the disappearance of the main character. What finally did it for me was a cruel and completely unnecessary description of killing a pet that one might think fit the plot or added to the novel. I could not get that image out of my mind and I stopped reading the novel shortly after that. Do yourself a favor. If you want to read a murder mystery that takes place in Ireland, read Tana French.

Why would they when all the roads that lead to Mulderrig are downhill so that leaving is uphill all the way?â€Mahoney returns to Mulderrig, although he has no memory of being there, it was in Mulderrig he was born. Raised in a Dublin orphanage, he never knew his mother, has no memory of her or of family, or even of this place.â€She couldnâ€™t have known it but it was then that her baby stopped crying. The void her son had fallen into without the cradle of her gaze was immeasurable. He lay as mute as a little mushroom.â€Heâ€™s an adult now, old enough to search for her, for the reasons why she abandoned him. Who, and where he comes from.At first Mahoneyâ€™s presence goes mostly unnoticed by the mortal members of town, but Mahoney is aware of those beyond the realm who hover around him, teasing him with their presence. Their eyes tell so much, and nothing at all at the same time.â€For the dead are drawn to those with shattered soulsâ€.He is aware of the others, can see them, but he canâ€™t see her. His mother. Orla Sweeney.He has a photograph of her, where sheâ€™s holding him as an infant, given to him as he was leaving the Orphanage. Sister Veronica had left him an envelope, his real name, and the town of his birth: Mulderrig. He knows from the note that he was taken from his mother, by unknown townspeople, because his mother was â€œthe curse of the town.â€â€His dark eyes are her eyes, the shape of his face, hers. The way he stands with his weight shifted back on his heels and his nose in the air, hers.â€And so, Mahoney arrives in Mulderrig in search of himself.Jess Kidd shares her story in writing that is lovely, inspired, ingenious, and quintessentially Irish in the colloquial expressions. I thought it was crazy because i have been praying for God to just send me a sign of what to do and here i am looking at this random couple's picture saying to read this book, so i bought the book. And let me tell you, I haven't even finished reading this yet, but so far it has really helped my relationship with my fiancÃ©. We read a little bit every night together as an extra bible study. And I reccomend this book to every couple now! God works is mysterious ways and answers prayers!

This is a great book by Craig. His style of writing makes it feel as if he's having a conversation with you. Likes he's preaching specifically to you. I can be having the worst day and all I need to do is pick up a Craig Groeschel book and I start to feel lifted. The Christian atheist makes so many valid points about believing in God when our lifestyles depict otherwise. Many times this book put me in check and really had me reevaluating a lot of my actions.

I started reading this book as part of a class at church and enjoyed the book and discussion. It made me think about my Christian walk and where it is going.

I confess. I am a Christian atheist. This book made me realize although I call myself a Christian, I have not fully surrendered my life to Christ. This is the catalyst that I needed to start me on my way to becoming a true Christian.

Great book. A little simple but the concepts are solid. Easy to read, good for a book club. Each chapter stands on it's own so if you meet with your book club regularly it's ok if someone has missed a few meetings, they just have to read the chapters you're discussing at the time. We're using it for our women's bible study summer book club.

this book was truely amazing. I am sure it saved my marriage. Ten years ago I had an affair. It was a very difficult time for my husband and I although he never mentioned leaving. I thought we had made it through that time of our life and even became closer vowing never to take each other for granted and cherish every moment we had together. This past Janruary he told me he wanted a divorce. He said he never got over it and knew since that day he would leave but he was just waiting for the kids to be out and successful as adults. I was devestated and begged him not to leave. Over the course of 7 months he went back and forth changing his mind sometimes lasting as long as a day. In July he made me tell the kids that we were divorcing and why. My daughter gave us this cd and I listened to it and put it in his truck when he left for a hunting trip. I aslo wrote a 2 page letter to him praying for him. His peace and happiness. I prayed that he would seek God as he had been angry with him ever since the affair 10 years ago because he prayed for me everyday and God let this happen. When he came home from the trip he wanted to try again and we have been together since. Thank you pastor Craig. I have shared this cd with many people.

I'm only half through this book and I love it. It is very convicting and helps you realize how much we live like we don't have God.

This book is both encouraging and challenging. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to be challenged in their faith and wants a closer walk with God. The book arrived promptly and in the condition which the seller stated upon my ordering it. Thank you.

Good book however it is boring. I have read the oz principle and attended the one day training session. So much emphasis is based on pharmaceutical companies I found the message to get lost. There are other companies out there. I am of the opinion that if I get one good thing out of a book it was worth the cost and time. I can't seem to remember a whole lot from this book.

Understanding what your team needs to change into the new direction helps you to help them achieve your new goals. With this understanding you won't waste time trying to get them to perform with the wrong leadership from you. Great stuff that really has worked for teams I lead. Much thanks to the authors.P.S. The target audience of the book is business professionals interested in developing a culture of accountability within an organization. In my opinion the strengths of this book are few, though conceptually the authors propose a foundational, though rudimentary, structure describing how one might go about inciting cultural change. That said, there are too many weaknesses to justify suffering through the long winded â€œreal-lifeâ€ examples that compose the bulk of most chapters; specifically the outdated concepts that are the core of the material presented, the oversimplification of the informationâ€™s utility as applicable to all business cultures, and the incessant lists, methods and systems the authors advertise as essential to the process of instilling a culture of accountability. There are so many better choices in this field of study that I cannot comfortably recommend the book; not even as foundational reference material.â€¢ Who is the book written for?The book is written in such a way that makes me suspect that the authors were providing high level leaders something to distribute among their subordinate managers as required reading when approaching the topic of change management through cultural development. Therefore, I was not surprised at the many customer reviews stating that they were, in fact, encouraged by a manager or boss to give it a read and explain the large brush strokes to their direct reports and teams. Of course, the publishing company, hoping to sell a copy to every business person on the planet, touts it as useful material to the everyman business person who desires to instill the virtue of accountability in the souls of their organizations.â€¢ Specific Strengths of the BookI believe that Change the Culture, Change the Game would be best suited as an introductory read for managers within an organization that has become so stagnant in their culture that they require immediate and drastic alterations to abate disaster. It presents some basic concepts and fills in the blanks with descriptive, though, as previously stated, long winded, allegory that fail to construct a complete plan of action. This being the case, one would expect that it might spark an interest in some of its audience and encourage them to look deeper into the topics presented, thereby becoming the initial stepping stone that might provide a manager the tools necessary to understand and effect real change in an organizationâ€™s culture.â€¢ Specific Weaknesses of the BookThe material presented is dated, and as far from the forefront in the field of organizational behavior as VHS tape is to media delivery methodology. I was extremely disappointed to find that the 2012 edition didnâ€™t add fundamentally to the original printing of the book in 2001, even though so much progress has been made in this field in the past decade. I very much dislike books that present themselves as â€˜theâ€™ authority on a topic, promising innovative techniques and cutting edge strategic insights, but deliver nothing more than a regurgitation of outmoded information. I found the recommendations of the authors to be elementary, effectively cookie-cuttering something as complex and unique as an organizationâ€™s corporate culture into a one-size-fits-all pyramid of buzz-word ubiquity.â€¢ What Other Reviewers Have Said for and Against the Book and Your ReplyAs one would expect, the majority of reviews on Amazon.com are generally positive, some of which appear to be contrived by those who stood to benefit from book sales. However, I did notice that in many of the positive reviews, my sentiments were echoed in part or in their entirety, but for whatever reason, the reviewer still gave the book the coveted 5 star rating. The 1 star ratings seemed more sincere and in line with my own experience. The endorsements pages within the book itself ~ 4 pages of praise from renowned business leaders and industry heavy hitters comprise the first 4 pages of the text~ are all resoundingly positive and recommend it highly as a must read. Then again the publisher wouldnâ€™t have been doing a very good job of marketing the product had they used anything but the shiny polished ones, therefore I discount them wholeheartedly. And finally, the initial 2001 edition received recognition as both a New York Times and Wall Street Journal Best Seller. Frankly, way back then, I might have personally helped them achieve that standing.â€¢ RecommendationsThough I would not recommend this particular book, I feel that this is a continuously evolving and exciting field of study with value and practical application to every organization, large and small. Therefore, I might suggest that people start where I did in my journey of behavioral discovery, and read anything written by John Kotter; starting with the revamped edition of Leading Change, while being sure not to miss The Heart of Change: Real-Life Stories of How People Change Their Organizations, or Our Iceberg Is Melting: Changing and Succeeding under Any Conditions all of which available on Amazon.com. About the Author

Richard Dominguez was born Eufrancio Ricardo Dominguez to Ricardo and Juanita Dominguez in Dallas, Texas on September 22, 1960. The second of seven children, Richard grew up in a section of West Dallas known during the Great Depression as 'The Devil's Back Porch'. Dominguez recalls his first exposure to comic books at the age of six, when he began sneaking in to his Uncle's room to read from his large comic book collections. In high school Richard enrolled in Commercial Art and later took Life Drawing classes at a community college before taking a job at a local supermarket chain to create and paint point-of-purchase displays. During the late '80s and early '90s, Richard worked as an intern for several art and design studios, later designing logos for Semi-Pro Sports teams and small companies.

The content of this Graphic Library series is perfect for ESL/EFL. My students find them very interesting. Unfortunately, the paperbacks in this series do not hold up. Some magazines can last a year under heavy, but careful use. These paperbacks can only be read a handful of times before they fall apart. I'd be willing to shell out a little more for something more durable, but the library binding is too expensive for such a short book.

I am a teacher and my students absolutely love these books! I would give them 5 stars, but they are cheaply made and pages start falling out after only a small amount of use.

Good book on the Transcontinental Railroad for grade school children.

Graphic nonfiction is an excellent way to present history to young readers, much as the Classic Comics of the 1940s and 1950s introduced young readers to literature such as Moby Dick. This particular nonfiction book crowds too much into the story, too fast, concentrating mainly on the crooked (as depicted within the book) businessmen who formed the companies that built the railroads. It touches very briefly on the men who actually dug the earth and laid the tracks -- the Irish and the Chinese. And it touches even less on the Indians through whose lands the railroad went. The story could use more maps to illustrate what was happening, and it could use charts to compare facts about costs, travel, and shipments before and after the building of the transcontinental railroad.

This book uses a comic-book graphic format to tell the history of the transcontinental railroad. Without getting too bogged down in politics or culture issues, it introduces you to some of the personalities and some of the obstacles faced in the construction of the railroad. Presents the building of this railroad as an indisputable good thing.Mini section of notes with good information.

This terrific book is a "must-have" for filmmakers, be they fiction or non-fiction, documentary or dramatic. To those not in the legal profession, the matter of copyrights and clearances seems like a dark, scary jungle we all wish we didn't have to go through but authors Michael Donaldson and Lisa Callif are there like friendly guides to help you stay out of danger and get to the other side safely. Co-written by one of the master architects of "Fair Use" for documentarians, why make your film making journey all the more treacherous? Mr. Donaldson discusses his heroic efforts that brought Errors and Omissions Insurance companies into the world of documentaries. He certainly deserves a medal for that! This book is quite an enjoyable read, full of real-world examples that will often amaze you. Yes, even the big boys of the feature film world get bit from time to time. Learn from their mistakes. You'll be told quite clearly what you can do, can't do, must do and must not do. If I had read this before I started to make my film, I'd probably have enjoyed the journey a lot more!

Solid. Real world advice by those who are actually doing it. I beg you, the true indie to read it, twice. Somebody has to tell you to about the real world. Downloading the forms if you have the hard copy like I did could be a little clunky but it's worth the effort to type out the links. I assume the Kindle version might be a click away to the forms. You got the script, you want to get your project going, don't mess it up on a legal technicality that will kill your deliverables. I have nothing to do with Donaldson's law firm and as an indie producer I insist you read it and also check out all the great and real advice they have on YouTube too.

I am the co founder of Chippendales and during that time dealt with our trademarks a great deal. After selling that I was a music lawyer and now I do business affairs and project development in films. Michael and Lisa's book is terrific. It is my go to bible for matters of clearance and copyright. It is so detailed that a screenwriter was having problems filing a copyright and I was able to open to the chapter in the book and walk her through it on the phone. The downloadable forms are an added plus. This book is a must for anyone involved in the business side of making films, TV or music

I had the 3rd edition and could not figure out why I should upgrade. The film clips alone are one of the sole reasons you should get this book. The boilerplate contracts are a nice touch, but it really comes down to understanding what conversation one should have with your attorney. Tons of information to sift through. Great book!

using this as a reference text while I'm in graduate school earning my MFA. I'm so glad I purchased it. The book delves into fair use, familiarity, and basic copyright theory without giving me too much information. It is well-organized and written by an expert in the field. For film and television writers, this book, IMHO, is indispensable.

Great book and helpful information. Only problem is the table of contents didn't make for easy reference (it could have been more detailed by subject and sub-subject). For example, I wanted to find the copyright laws surrounding the non-diegetic use of a cover song in a film. I never did find the answer in this book on that.

This book can be really boring if you're not into entertainment law, but it is super informative and useful. If you want to go into entertainment law or be a producer, it is super important to read and gives a good, relevant overview

This book gives excellent information that can be used by writers, producers and clearance professionals. Very comprehensive and easy to understand if you do not have prior legal experience.

So that's a lie.Her husband is not lying to her and he does love her. So that's a lie.She does lie, and that's the cheapest trick (next to using sudden magic) a writer can use.I read this all the way through in one sitting just because the book was so expensive I was determined to be able to review it knowing all there is to know about it. None of the characters are interesting; you just don't care what happens to them (if they're who the author says they are and if they're real characters in the first place). Once you realize Amber is paralytic and that she has a pushy medically-trained ex-boyfriend, you know who who put her into that state. And as soon as you hear she has cognitive problems, you know the rest of the story is up for grabs -- the author couldn't be bothered to write a tightly-woven plot so she just leaves it up to you to decide what's real.I taught line-of-action writing for twenty years, and if a student had brought this abomination to me, I would have told him/her to start over. This is just so bad I don't understand why anyone but a fellow ex-comp teacher would bother to read it.Save your money! If you want to read an emotionally-charged psychodrama with a cognitively-challenged female protagonist, read The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena. At least it's entertaining.

A main character who is in a coma and sometimes lies. I'm all in!Quite a spellbinding read from start to finish! We are not sure how Amber ended up in the hospital in this coma , but she does admit that sometimes she lies. This was like a puzzle and I was trying to put the pieces together, but couldn't entirely trust all the pieces. Very cleverly written and I loved hearing what Amber was thinking while in this coma sizing up everyone in the room and giving us her insight. Four stars because I felt there was almost too much going on. I'm not sure how to explain it, but with all the lies I think I wanted a more defined plot line.The narrative switches from Now (in coma) to Then (before the coma). I loved trying to figure out what the lies were and who to trust. It is super twisty and just when you think you have it figured out another twist flies your way! A fast read for me because I needed to find out what was going on.The ending was my favorite part because it leaves you questioning yourself and if you perhaps missed anything. I have a theory, but I guess I'll have to wait until the next book!

I thought there were only two sides. Good and evil. After reading Alice Feeneyâ€™s psychological thriller SOMETIMES I LIE, I am now convinced there is another super sinister side somewhere at the edge of evil. Man, oh, man. This book will not let you down, thriller lovers. You will be on the edge of whatever perch you read.The narrator is in a coma, but she can hear what is happening and what is going on is nothing short of terrifying. She is not sure what her responsibility is in how she got to the hospital and what harm she might have caused.Set aside some serious time to read because once you start this, I promise you will not be able to put this book down. For sure you will be creeped out, but that creep factor is what will keep you wanting for more.Feeneyâ€™s debut work is surely just the beginning of many more wicked tales to come.

I probably should not comment on this book, because I am totally confused by the end of the story. It does keep you reading, but it is also confusing, and at the end, you are left more confused than ever. None of the characters are likeable, but I suppose the author did a good job in developing them to BE unlikeable.

And then through diary entries from about 25 years ago.Now when I say Amber â€œwakesâ€ up in a coma, I mean she can hear what people are saying but she cannot talk, move or open her eyes. I really liked this POV. Was kind of freaky as I was reading and just imagining how that would be, being able to hear but not tell anyone. She would be screaming answers but only in her head. And then she would slip back into the darkness and have memories. But are they real or imaginations? I think the author did great job with this part of the book. The writing and descriptions was so good , that you can just imaging what Amber is feeling.I really liked all the characters. They were all well developed. You don't know who to trust and what to believe. Great pacing and as it got father along it the book the suspense picks up, that I wanted to read faster. But I had to slow myself down to absorb what I was reading because I was getting confused LOL Still a couple things that have me a little confused (may go back and skim the book again) But I still enjoyed it very much.

Like all the recent psychological thrillers, I was mesmerized initially. I thought that at last I'd found a good book. NOT. Like the rest, it became so preposterous and bizarre that I don't even care how it ends. Skip this entirely unless you don't mind a totally outrageous and ridiculous plot.

I liked this book a lot until I was almost finished with it. Then it got so confusing I couldn't follow it. The first half was gripping and interesting but the last half was just too hard to follow. I didn't even finish it.

Fantastic book, a psychological thriller that grabs you. You need your wits about you reading this with many twists and turns.

One of my criteria for judging an episode guide is: Does it have anything to say about various minor recurring characters? Because typically I like them more than the main cast. So my question in reading this book was, did it find time to include an entry on Dr. Zelenka? Yes. Yes, it did. And all was right with the world.This is a guide to the first season of "Stargate Atlantis", a spin-off, of course, to the popular "Stargate: SG-1" series. In this show, our group of heroes and heroines is stuck in the Pegasus Galaxy after a one-way transgalactic hop via a super-powered gate dial-out from the SGC on Earth. They hope to find the lost city of Atlantis, home of the long-ago-ascended Ancients, and find it they do. Unfortunately, they also discover that the Ancients bailed out of Pegasus some 10,000 years ago after accidentally creating their own nemeses in the form of the Wraith, who really enjoy treating humans as tasty lifeforce snacks. And while there are various human-settled worlds still to be found, not all of them are delighted to see the folks from Earth show up, especially once word gets around that the Stargate team sort of accidentally woke the Wraith back up way before schedule.This book presents a brief summary of each episode of the first season, along with some minimal cast and crew notes. There's also commentary provided by cast and crew about what went on in the making of the episodes, what their original intentions had been, what worked and what didn't. There are brief character sketches of the main cast, which really have much more to do with details on the actors and how they got the roles and how they approach them.Also included is a section on the development of the show and another on some of the departments or key players (stunts, production design) behind the scenes. A lot of photos are provided, mostly in black and white but a few publicity stills in color.I had very low expectations for this book based on previous Stargate episode guides, but it very much exceeded them. It's not a classic of its kind nor indispensable, but if you're a keen fan of the show and you really want to know some of the details about what it takes to put together an episode, you won't be disappointed.

If your a fan of the series then you will want this book. I have all of the Stargate SG-1 series and found them very interesting to read and to having in my collection and you will to want this in your collection.The photographys and illustrations you can't get any where else.As a fan of the series this book will help you learn some of the lingo.I've enjoyed all of the SG-1 books and just started my collection with the Atlantis and I'm sure you will as well.

Fans of Stargate Atlantis will want this to gain insights into the show's episodes, including the actors' thoughts on what they liked and didn't like. I could have used a little more from series lead Joe Flanigan, and a little less from set designers whining about how difficult it was to find the perfect set, etc. However, those are minor quibbles. Buy this and explore your favorite episodes further.

I love Stargate Atlantis and can't get enough. This was a great addition to my SGA collection. Came as expected. :)

Stargate Atlantis Companion was through, in-depth and informative. Easy to follow and the characters, episodes, and background folks. S&H was prepared well also.

It's a nice companion, though it still hasn't answered my question about why McKay's first name turned out to be Meredith.

I'm glad I took a chance and picked up this book. Can't get enough Morse & Lewis! It's really useful in pointing out most of the locations of most, but not all (in episodes of Morse and the pilot and first 7 episodes of Lewis. The short descriptions of each episode contain spoilers, so don't read them if you haven't seen the episode. He describes and gives the history of various landmarks around Oxford, as well as the colleges (with maps), and the buildings of Oxford University - the Ashmolean Museum, which Morse and Lewis visit quite often), Bodlean Library, etc. Quite a lot of photos, many in color and maps too. I'm glad as the author notes, Colin Dexter insisted on the Oxford locations - it's part of the appeal of the show for us. It's about the size and shape of a travel guide. I should also note that this book is included with the Morse Complete Collection DVD set.

I was disappointed that this book discussed the TV series not the books. If that is what you want, good. If not, be aware.

We use this book constantly while watching Inspector Morse DVD's, and look for the places we have visited in Oxford.

I thought this was a novel written with the characters from the series, but it, sadly, is not. It is a book about the series. It includes details, descriptions of locations and the actors, along with lots of photos of scenes.

In general, I love this handy-dandy little book, having recently returned from adult summer school at Christ Church College, Oxford University. So imagine my annoyance when I see that in my edition of the book (purchased here at Amazon), under the Christ Church entry, the map is repeated from the previous entry of BRASENOSE College and is not a map of CC at all. Pain. In. the. Neck. And stupid, stupid editors. And careless author for letting it get into print. But otherwise the book is pretty good, though not as detailed in all places as I would have liked.
