I’m not going to lie. I’m sort of a Hamilton fan. Having previously read Ron Chernow’s compelling biography, Alexander Hamilton, I already knew Hamilton’s wife, Eliza Schuyler Hamilton, was an intriguing and resilient woman. Also, having read America’s First Daughter by historical fiction novelists Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie, I knew this dynamic writing duo wouldn’t do anything less than exceptional in telling Eliza’s story; therefore, I highly anticipated My Dear Hamilton. Dray and Kamoie far exceeded my expectations. I absolutely devoured My Dear Hamilton from beginning to end! There’s no doubt that Eliza Schuyler Hamilton lived through an exciting time in American history. She was right in the center in witnessing the birth of a new nation. She’s mostly known as the wife of Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States; however, there’s so much more to this woman with a compelling life story. I very much appreciated that her life before marriage is portrayed in My Dear Hamilton. We get to know the endearing relationships she had with her family, especially her father and sisters Angelica and Peggy. It’s with these strong familial bonds that she would deeply rely on later in life.At its heart, My Dear Hamilton is very much a love story filled with betrayal, sacrifice, loyalty and forgiveness. Yes, she was indeed a devoted wife and mother, but she was also characterized in this book as a woman possessing admirable inner strength. Through their intensive research, the authors expertly shape, not only Eliza’s journey through life, but her emotional well being as well. Readers will celebrate with Eliza through her happiest of times, feel utter heartbreak as she endures public humiliation, and be encouraged by her sheer determination and accomplishments.Eliza outlived her husband by 50 years. In her 97 years, it’s fair to say that Eliza Hamilton had loved and lost so much. Her emotions are so thoughtfully detailed with the passing of the most important people in her life. I was very curious about her life after her husband’s infamous duel. There’s a scene towards the end of the book, and this is not a spoiler, where she literally lays everything out in front of her to try to make sense of what she’s learned. I found this moment to be poignant, sorrowful, and something totally relatable as humans. I’d like to think that scene was how it really played out years ago, but it was surely memorable the way the authors depicted how she may have dealt with that part of her life.If Eliza Schuyler Hamilton were alive today, I think she would applaud how Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie interpreted her life though My Dear Hamilton. Another brilliant and fascinating read from these talented authors!

After America's First Daughter, my expectations from this team were high -- but they were exceeded in every way as I read this truly impressive book.It is an incredible, surprising, and altogether lovely tribute to the woman who stood beside one of the most unknowable, irascible, energetic, and passionate of the many people who contributed indelibly to the foundation of this nation. I am left both humbled at the accomplishments of the Hamiltons, and uplifted by the depiction of Eliza.More than that, though, I am awed by the scope of the work that Dray and Kamoie undertook. Spanning the tumult of the Revolution, and reaching all the way up to the eve of the Civil War, through the decades where the nation itself was being invented out of whole cloth, My Dear Hamilton hints at the changes that rushed past Eliza, while maintaining its focus on her as the prime mover of her own story.Watching her emotionally knocked to the ground, over and over, and yet each time finding her feet again and not merely persevering, but triumphing, we get a sense of the force of Eliza's personality, and just how equal a match she was to her husband, the force of nature we've come to know in the wake of the musical Hamilton. In the end, My Dear Hamilton works not only as a marvelously rich work of historical literature, but as a deeply personal meditation on one woman's process of making her place in history, keenly aware that history has its eyes on her.

When my daughter and I saw Hamilton in February, I turned to her after the final notes and said “wow, Eliza Hamilton was a remarkable woman! She needs her own story.” I was delighted to discover that Dray and Kamoie has taken that task on, and brilliantly so—I’m a political history nerd to the core, and I learned a lot from this book. It takes a gifted writer to keep you turning pages when you already know the ending, but this team managed it. Don’t miss this book!

I love history and I was so excited to read My Dear Hamilton. It was so much more than I expected. It was like taking a behind the scenes journey in the founding of our great nation through the eyes of Eliza Hamilton. What a journey it was! There is so much content in this book surrounding the Founding Fathers and what efforts and sacrifices they went through to establish our country. I learned so much! The authors did a fantastic job of researching and creating a history of Eliza Hamilton based on facts and documents. Her story has so many facets to it. From her childhood and family devotion, to her early adulthood and meeting Alexander Hamilton, to her marriage to him and the life they had together. It was a marriage that was loving and supportive but there were also struggles and difficult times. Eliza was Alexander Hamilton's champion and believed in his love for the country and his desire to make it succeed. This story is a saga that I loved reading and made me appreciate even more what it took to begin our great nation.I appreciate the in depth conversation at the end of the book about what the authors created the story on and their research into writing this novel.

This book was historical fiction at its best. The characters were well developed, believable and heroic. Betsy or Eliza as she was called was a remarkable woman. Some things that happened in this book I did not know and other events I had forgotten. This book brought it all to life. What turmoil occured in the early days of our independence. Backstabbing, lies, affairs, sex scandals and friends becoming enemies were part of the new government. History seems to be repeating itself in today's world. Eliza finally has success in having her husband recognized for all he did. He was a brilliant founder with a brilliant wife.

My Patients and Other Animals: A Veterinarian's Stories of Love, Loss, and Hope, by Suzy Fincham-Gray

Review

“Suzy Fincham-Gray gives readers rare insight into the making of a compassionate doctor. Her passion for both science and the animals she cares for, combined with her eloquence as a writer, made me want Suzy as both my dogs’ veterinarian and my own friend.”—Teresa J. Rhyne, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Dog Lived (and So Will I) “A beautifully written look at modern veterinary medicine . . . Fincham-Gray, who also has an MFA in creative writing, has created a wonderfully introspective look at the role of the veterinarian.”—Booklist (starred review) “Written with candor, humility, and humor, this memoir tells of the professional evolution of a veterinary medicine graduate to a more seasoned internal medicine practitioner. This compelling read is highly recommended for anyone interested in veterinary medicine or who has a love of animals.”—Library Journal“Affecting dispatches from the life of an animal doctor . . . In this affably written amalgam of pedagogic and heartwarming material, the author chronicles her early years as a medical professional . . . Pet fanatics and animal lovers in general will savor these bittersweet stories exploring the enduring human-animal bond. A fervent, anecdotal memoir infused with heart, compassion, and a natural love for animals on every page.”—Kirkus Reviews “Fincham-Gray explores in her candid debut the intricacies of her profession from inside the medical exam room. . . . The medical aspects of the narrative will likely draw future veterinarians to the book, but it’s the tales of Fincham-Gray’s patients that will keep general readers hooked.”—Publishers Weekly “Engrossing, visceral . . . My Patients and Other Animals is at its best when the author is at her nerviest, removing the romantic sheen from per profession and replacing it with a more realistic and complicated portrait. If it’s sometimes tragic, it’s also consistently rooted in compassion.”—USA Today“This beautiful, tender, and magnificent read isn’t just about one woman’s love and care for animals and the people who love them, or about this veterinarian’s big heart and deep intelligence. It’s also about the ethical complexity of caring for other living beings, and a clear-eyed look at what binds us to other creatures of the world and why that matters.”—Emily Rapp Black, New York Times bestselling author of The Still Point of the Turning World “A gem of a book . . . Fincham-Gray’s nonstop life taking care of all sorts of nonhuman animals in need is a deeply inspirational and personal journey and a model for all, filled with joy, sorrow, tears, love, and loss.”—Marc Bekoff, author of Canine Confidential: Why Dogs Do What They Do “Fincham-Gray writes extremely well, and her enthusiasm shines through on every page. I enjoyed reading this book, and while doing so I was made aware of the author’s absolute dedication to her work. Like James Herriot, she portrays her profession in a very good light.”—Jim Wight, author of The Real James Herriot: A Memoir of My Father

Enjoyable read!!

This book provided so much information on what it takes to be a vet including the emotion investment...loved it!

I was hoping for more James Herriott style vet stories. This book details more the author's experiences as a student, intern and vet. She also does share stories of some of her memorable patients; I just wanted more of that! This is a good book to read if you have pets. It gives you a inside look at the thinking behind the decisions a vet makes. It will surely help you when you next visit your vet!

Animal-related stories usually end in a sad tone with the death of the four-legged hero, so I wasn't sure what to expect after finishing the first chapter of Dr. Fincham-Gray's memoir. She describes her first euthanasia, on an English pony, by shooting it in the head. The second chapter, with her internship at the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School in Philadelphia, gives readers a graphic description of her first gunshot victim, a Doberman named Hercules. I can say it does get more compassionate after the second chapter, but there are times the sadness and grief was too much for me and I had to take breaks from reading.Memoirs include other aspects of one's life besides one's profession, and here again Fincham-Gray is honest. She was lonely, missed her English friends and family, and hated American beer and bread. She adopts a cat named Monty for companionship and she slowly opens up about her passion for treating small animals and her slow integration to American life. Her internship became a residency to a green card and stability in San Diego with a husband, three cats and a dog named Emma.I have no doubt that Dr F-G is a great Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). She has specialized in internal medicine. She notes repeatedly how she rarely turned down a case; her desire to help as many animals as possible often overloaded her physically and emotionally. She worked long hours, took her work home with her, and demanded her employees do the same. I'm sure she alienated many co-workers. Her chapters are filled with a lot of textbook-like narratives of the history and progression of various diseases like rabies, Foot and Mouth disease, the make-up of dog and cat kibble, as well as more rare diseases that dogs in Mexico can get: transmissible venereal tumors (TVT). These long interruptions of various diseases does curtail the flow of her stories, but for someone who's always interested in potential diseases and injuries in cats and dogs, this is a very informative, albeit also at times very graphically emotional memoir. Some chapters, like the chapter about little Fritz the dachshund, or even her own cat Monty's story had me so sad that I had to stop reading the book for the rest of the day. What I do like about this memoir is Dr. F-G's honesty. Not only does she pick up skills as a DVM, she also learns to be more compassionate to her human patients and the clinicians, technicians and surgeons around her. She starts off sounding haughty and impatient and ends the final chapters with more sensitivity. Learning empathy in medical school isn't taught, it is something one gains from years of practice. Her desire to be the best in her field has garnered her peer respect in San Diego, where she now lives and continues to practice medicine, but it took her years of hard work to achieve. While the chapters are long and often include the stories of several animals and a plethora of clinical text, animal lovers like myself will appreciate the knowledge and healing powers Dr. F-G has honed in on over the years. While this is no James Herriot memoir, pet owners will learn a thing or two about their cat or dog, medical procedures, even how to adopt an animal from Mexico.

When I ordered this, based on the description, I guess I was expecting more of a James Herriot type book (All Creatures Great and Small etc)--stories with happy endings for the most part. This book was much darker in the sense that the author/veterinarian was more serious, there more "euthanasias" and the author doesn't have the same writing skill as Herriott.Fincham-Gray's passion for her field of veterinary medicine comes through clearly. We do get to see her change as the book progresses from more of a textbook vet to that of a compassionate vet.I did find myself laughing a bit about her story of a cat named Tiger in the chapter called Monty (chapters often contain several stories). Tiger is a fiesty thing and is quite a challenge to treat while staying at the practice. I had a cat that had thyroid surgery and stayed overnight for a few days. When I started reading about how the techs handled Tiger--my first thought was oh no is was this my cat? Fortunately no. The story ends with the vet nervously watching the owner open the cage and Tiger is just a sweetie--purring, rubbing his head. With my cat the techs drew straws to see who would care for him and when I showed up and opened the cage he was just like Tiger! The chapter that touched me the most and had me tearing up was "Grayling." Grayling was a 140 lb, 6 year old Irish Wolfhound that Dr. F-G was treating for an aggressive infection. The Irish Wolfhound is my breed of choice. I first saw one when I was 19 and have loved and adored them ever since. I felt bad for the dog in that the vet practice wasn't really familiar with the health and physical needs of the Wolfhound. There are not a lot of them and those of us who have them tend to be pretty well versed in their health issues. By the end of the chapter Grayling had recovered from a massive infection, but ended up with heart issues. Cardiomyopathy is the number one cause of death in the wolfhound. Dr. F-G suspected she had the disease, but let the owners decide when the hound should be tested. Now I am prejudiced, but I felt Dr. F-G did not understand the breed and I felt she lacked empathy for the dog itself. This is no James Herriot book with a folksy feel good approach. You are likely to learn a lot more about veterinary medicine. I guess my biggest issue is the writer/vet. She seems to lack empathy in many instances--more interested in the diagnosis and the outcome rather than her patient. I don't think I've ever had a vet like her--one that seems very detached and more interested in the clinical diagnosis/treatment than in the patient. So if you are expecting a book that is a fun read through and through - this isn't it, but it is an interesting look at veterinary medicine.

I really enjoyed reading Canyons but I also live in the Tularosa Valley where this book was supposed to take place. It made me want to delve into research of the Mescalero Apache culture and traditions. I also marveled at how it was not so long ago in history that the Apache roamed this valley freely without the reservation. I have purchased other books now on learning about the Apache and plan on attending some of their festivities in the future.

This is a story of a bond that forms between Brennan and Coyote Runs. The only problem they are separated by a two hundred year span of time. The alternating chapters made me feel like I was reading two books which was great. This is another great adventure story by Paulsen. I love his writing style, and I love Brennan's journey to put Coyote Runs to rest.

My son loved this story!

Canyons was a good book, but I wouldn't say it was fantastic. The narration on the tape was very nice - not dull like many I've heard before. However, although the one I ordered was "unabridged," it did skip whole paragraphs in the book (my students followed along with the tape). This was confusing at times.I suggest that any TEACHER using the tape to supplement their own classroom reading look for a CD version!!!!

one of my favorite Paulsen books.simple story of two young men trying to reach manhood in a parallel story with a twist. i enjoy Paulsens' clear and straightforward presentation of each young man and the trails he faces in his growth to manhood

I'm teaching this novel within a unit on Native American folklore/literature to middle school students. Paulsen relates to the struggles of adolescents today in a compare/contrast of a past culture.

Good story for adults and kids. Helped my son get interested in reading . Great audio book for in the car

Bought for my son and he said it was very good. He hasn't read a book in several years and said he couldn't put it down, read it right through. Says the author knows how to capture the reader.
