Plenty of good background info but some details have changed since publication. Will get you round the country OK. As usual with Bradt the street plans are poor and not as easy to use as lonely planet.

I felt it was not well researched and thin on info, thus disappointed. Both the Sudans should have been included.-I've lost my enthusiasm for Bradt and cancelled my South Sudan order

It is so hard to find information on this turbulent area of the world that this is wonderful. Bradt is a known name in travel guides and my library is happy to have this book.

This is one of the worst and most incorrect travel books that is available about any country and that I encountered in decades of travelling and living in many countries around the globe. Too much 'information' is so wrong that it sometimes is even dangerous to rely on it, particularly in a country like Sudan. Where there is an established bridge the authors make you believe that one must take a ferry.Apparently not too much has been corrected or even newly researched for this third edition, when one compares it to edition 1 of a few years back.Information regarding how to reach sites frequently is so imprecise or missing at all that hardly anybody is ever able to locate a number of sites, instead the 'new' authors rely on taking a local ricksha or donkey cart to get you there. Certainly no traveller with his own vehicle will ever be able to locate a number of localities. Even some of the very few given GPS coordinates are not accurate. Several interesting locations are not mentioned at all. Road or track conditions are at times wrong or missing at all. Important accommodation facilities are unknown to that 'guide', which is inexcusable as Sudan doesn't have many possibilities anyway. Prices can't always be correct, so this is not criticised.It appears that the new authors probably have visited the museum in Khartoum and otherwise were quickly, if at all, driven by some sort of guide to a few common places only, without grasping very much of what goes on and where they really are.Save your money or at least be very careful when using that 'travel guide'.Regrettably there are not many choices, or no other choices, when it comes to Sudan. A traveller to Sudan most probably has more adventurous and explorative characteristics than usual and therefore should be prepared better to `handle' that book, hopefully.Background: I live in Sudan and have just finished another 4-week self-drive tour with my own 4x4 across all of Sudan, including severe desert crossings and to a number of places and regions that are not even mentioned in that book. It would have been quite hair-raising and at times dangerous having had to rely on that book, although each and every part of that `guide' was studied and verified when travelling and exploring.Note: that 4-week tour was done alone with my wife, no guide whatsoever, no other vehicle, and no guidance whatsoever from anybody or any tour operator and it was wonderful.

This guide book is poorly written. Most of the information is outdated before it was even published due to the rapidly changing situation in South Sudan and the present civil war. It is obvious that much of the information was obtained 2nd or even 3rd hand. Do not waste your money buying this book. I work in South Sudan and know this book will be of little value to the visitor to South Sudan.

The only other consulting text that comes to mind which meets the quality of this work is 'The Secrets of Consulting', by Weinberg (see my review). And while 'Secrets' is an incredibly informative and entertaining masterpiece, the three authors who collaborated for this piece have provided a great service to anyone involved with advising other individuals, regardless of profession." What Green and Howe offer with this recent effort follows well in these earlier footsteps. In the words of the authors, this is "a more detailed how-to guide for people in any professional role", and I could not agree more. This book is not a replacement, but a compliment, providing a hands-on approach to developing and maintaining trust-based relationships that will certainly cause me to recommend it to colleagues.The material that the authors present is broken down into five parts: Part 1 ("A Trust Primer"), Part 2 ("Developing Your Trust Skill Set"), Part 3 ("Developing Business with Trust"), Part 4 ("Managing Relationships with Trust"), and Part 5 ("Building and Running a Trustworthy Organization"). These parts are broken down into 31 chapters, each typically containing just a few pages, which greatly helped my digestion of the content as well as my focus on specific areas of trust. In addition, the conclusions of each of the chapters provide truly thought-provoking worksheets that challenged me during my reading and will continue to challenge me, as I expect to revisit these worksheets in the future as I grow as a professional. And one of the specific aspects about this book that I appreciated, as with "The Trusted Advisor", is all the lists throughout the book (164 in total, more than a 5-fold increase from the earlier effort!) that are also contained in a comprehensive appendix.As a consultant, chapter personal favorites include Chapter 1 ("Fundamental Truths"), Chapter 3 ("The Dynamics of Influence"), Chapter 4 ("Three Trust Models"), Chapter 6 ("Listen"), Chapter 7 ("Partner"), Chapter 8 ("Improvise"), Chapter 9 ("Risk"), Chapter 15 ("Talking Price"), Chapter 21 ("Accelerating Trust"), Chapter 23 ("Shifting from Tactics to Strategy"), Chapter 24 ("My Client is a Jerk: Transforming Relationships Gone Bad"), and Chapter 25 ("Dealing with Untrustworthy People"). Based on my experience, all professionals will find valuable what the authors present within the chapters of Part 2. While many other texts address the fact that self-knowledge is essential, if any potential readers of this book do not have time to read everything that the authors have to share, the other chapters within this portion of the book (on listening, partnering, improvising, and risk-taking) should be considered required reading for everyone who works with clients to any degree.The "Trust Equation", Trust = (Credibility + Reliability + Intimacy) / Self-Orientation, or T = (C + R + I) / S, is revisited and expanded upon by the authors alongside two other trust models in Chapter 4, resulting in one of the best discussions in the text. "Self-orientation, which we like to call your 'S', rears its ugly head most often when you feel some sort of fear: fear of looking bad, fear of rejection, fear of loss. All of these fears are perfectly normal. And they are what makes your S look big. What makes a difference is having the ego strength to see the fear, acknowledge it, 'get off your S', and move on. After all, obsessing about Big S mistakes is just more Big S." Following this discussion, "The Trust Creation Process", a five-step model (engage, listen, frame, envision, and commit) in which the authors stress order, is presented, followed by "The Trust Principles" that include a focus on the other, a collaborative approach, a medium-to-long-term perspective, and a habit of being transparent.As the authors explain, "being or becoming trustworthy cannot be reduced to pure behaviors. Your actions are driven by your beliefs, and your beliefs are driven by your values or principles. Trustworthy behavior is far too complex to fake without beliefs and values behind it. If your values don't drive you to behave in a trustworthy manner all the time, you will be found out quickly. Hence, the trust equation and the way you use the trust creation process are really just outcomes of the principles you hold, the trust principles. The way to become trusted is to act consistently from those principles." And later, the authors introduce a refrain that is common throughout the rest of the text, especially echoing throughout part 3, which personally brought to mind the negative repurcussions an ABC (always be closing) mindset made famous by Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross is likely to bring: "Focusing on relationships nurtures transactions, whereas focusing on transactions chokes off relationships."

I bought this book for a webinar I delivered on reputation. I am glad I did! The book is a very easy read, the language is not too hard to access and it is not boring. I am especially liked the chapters around listening and influence - they have proven useful frameworks for my coaching sessions. I also like the fact that at the end of every chapter, there are worksheets for you to take action on what you've just read.

"The 50th Law" by 50 Cent & Robert Greene is a unexpected hidden gem that is worth its weight in diamonds (as are the rest of Greene's books).The main idea of the book, "The 50th Law", is fearlessness. The authors details and conveys how to achieve this through ten chapters each centered around a principle or "law" if you will. 50 Cents life is used as the main template/reference for each principle (and the overarching fearlessness law). However Greene also makes use of other stories throughout history for this purpose as well.Overall I feel the book delivered on its purpose. It's able to convey it's lessons well through both story and reasoning. Also it's alot shorter and less textbooky than Greenes other books so that's a plus.Personally the book was inspiring. I of course had been a casual fan of 50 Cents music but I had no idea that behind the scenes was a man who overcame so much and intelligently clawed his way to the top.As for Greene this was my first book I read by him (well actually I'm reading it and The 48 Laws of Power at the same time). And it was so good that I read through it quickly and went out and bought all of Greenes other books.Greenes books paint a picture of reality as it is not as some want it to be. They give you the tools to protect yourself and thrive in the world. Honestly I feel like I've been given dynamite or the ten commandments after reading all his books. They are that powerful and good.So do I recommend this book? Absolutely for yourself and maybe your spouse or kids (so they can survive and thrive too). However I would advise you to not go around blabbing off about what you learned. When so many other people suck it makes it easier for you to stand out. A good magician never reveals their secerets.If you read this book also at minimum read the 48 Laws of Power. Also check out Greenes other books.

Anyone who may be under the mistaken assumption that this is just a "Hip Hop book" about a "rapper" (even slightly contradicting my own title) should change that perception right now. I am a fan of 50 cent as a rapper and business mogul, but Greene's work goes beyond that and even 50 Cent's own personal life as Curtis Jackson before becoming a rapper, to give you historical examples of everyone from Peter and Catherine the Great, to Niccolo Machiavelli, to Theolonius Monk, Moses, and Abraham Lincoln about how to accumulate and acquire personal power through leadership even in the face of fear and being willing to take risks instead of "passively aggressively" trying to get the things you want in society, which most people do. People may think that Greene's work promotes a kind of amorality or even worse a form of immorality, but I find that Robert Greene's work tends to have a strong moral backdrop, possibly with the exception of "Art of Seduction". In my opinion Greene's outlook may be that it is noble to have the goal of helping others, he even speaks highly of Lincoln's fight against slavery in this book, but your first moral obligation is to be able to help and empower yourself so then you can do things that will help and benefit others, but doing so on your specific and defined terms, that do not end up "helping others" and harming yourself, this is a lesson that can hurt to learn, even for myself, but you see it clearly over and over again, from business to interpersonal relationships, it's better to start off being a bit of an a%& and then become kind, than be kind and be full of resentment and frustration at life's challenges. This book tackles it head on and explains that fear can be a trap that no amount of extra reading, positive thinking or trite phrases will solve. I have never seen a book that clearly explains the impact of this inner fear and how it clouds your judgment and generates avoidance as a form of coping.Kudos to to Mr. Greene and Mr. Jackson for openly discussing and analyzing this problem and, more importantly, providing a step by step blueprint on how to move your life forward.

Mr. Greene's treatise about fear and its fundamental causes is essential in today's world. If one looks at our society as a whole, and tries to look as deeply as possible, one can see that most of one's actions and those of others are made up of fear based choices. By that I mean, people often choose things based on fear and may not know or be fully aware of it. This book opened my eyes to my own fears and forced me to see what really frightens me. Now that I'm clear on those things, I have a better understanding of how to deal with or even eliminate these unnecessary emotions. This book taught me that fear is just something you experience when you're not really prepared for something that matters to you. Think about it.
