Review

"Cooper's thoughful and engaging book is indeed A Philosophy of Gardens -- his rather unique and stimulating way of conceptualizing how, carefully reflected upom, gardening practices and appreciation can engender an epiphany of sorts on the mysteries of existence."--Donald Crawford, Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews

This book is an interesting philosophical discussion on the appreciation of gardens. To be sure, very little has been published on the subject, and rarely from a philosophical point of view. The author gives special attention to distinctions that may be glossed over by an inattentive mind. Gardens are sometimes dealt with superficially. But here we have a serious reflection on their possible meanings to various people and within various cultures. Gardens vary tremendously, and, to be able to appreciate their full potential, one must maybe view them in a holistic manner, such as is done in this book. In this sense, Cooper's little treatise is refreshing and illuminating. What I found a bit irksome was his way of making references to and fro within his own text. Some more clear system was maybe needed in the writing process. Frequently postponing arguments and themes for later may not, I think, be a good example of systematic writing. A better internal structure to the book would perhaps have produced more pleasurable reading. Also, the name of the book maybe would have been more precise if it took the form of something like 'A Philosophy on the Appreciation of Gardens', than 'of Gardens' as such. After this book, I still see the need for a true and proper 'philosophy of gardens'.

Intelligent writing about gardens and gardening is rare. I was delighted to find a used copy of this book that I will read more than once. The logic is solid and the basis for an intellectual approach to garden appreciation is the soundest I have discovered yet. It needs a wide audience.

This is a work of philosophy with abundant references to Kant and other philosophers. So the casual reader of garden books should be forwarded!Professor Cooper's approach is interesting and welcome to the relatively small number of rigorously philosophical treatments of gardens. I would like to say that Cooper is a philosopher in the Anglo-Analytic tradition, especially for his fine attention to language; some readers may be put off by his near obsession with precision of language. However, I was pleased to find numerous references to some of the analyses of gardens coming from literature, even quotations from Rumi and Japanese Zen.Overall, a rigorously philosophical approach to the place of gardens in human life. Worth reading IF you have a strong background (I'd say nothing less than a BA) in Western philosophy.

This book is stuffed with ideas and is extremely interesting. I'm about to start my third read, as it is still sinking in. I'm making a large garden and looking to do some writing about it and this book is very nourishing. It is however very poorly written and edited. How many sentences can I read with as many as eight commas! Fist the sentence goes one way, then anaother, then another, then twists off somewhere else, and so it goes on. The format size does not help the text either. I was so excited about this book, that I have leant to to two people. Both of them were unable to hardly start it, as they found the text impenetrable.

a book chock-full of useful information about careers and finding the job you like.

Heather Krasna has a great deal of experience in offering advice on finding public sector jobs, and is now the Director of Career Services at the University of Washington's Evans School of Public Affairs in Seattle. The book is a lively read, because of the large number of personal profiles, based upon Krasna's interviews. But most important for job seekers it has a great deal of practical advice with a lot of specific information.

I learned a lot about myself by completing the exercises in this book. Great insight that will help in the job search

Great guide for anyone wanting to learn more about jobs in the public sector, as well as how to successfully land a public job! Would especially recommend for those in MPA or MPP graduate programs.

I am interested in public service and I found this a very effective help to narrowing down what I want to do.

As a college career specialist, I was very impressed with this book. I have recommended it and lent it to students and workers interested in having a career that makes a difference. Well organized, clearly written and lists many excellent resources. Bravo Heather K.!

Okay.

Perfect. Just what I need for class. I wasn't sure this would get to me in time but this arrived in plenty of time. Thanks!

Five stars for everything . . . EXCEPT the narrator. He gets a zero . . . & there's so much of him. As another reviewer noted, these books are less about Inspector Hobbes & more, much more, about Andy. And I really, really regret that, as the rest of Inspector Hobbes is very good to excellent, with good writing, intriguing characters, quite a lot of humor, imaginative (though not very frequent) action scenes & acceptable mysteries. So sad.Inspector Hobbes & his housekeeper are wonderful characters & I loved everything about these books . . . except the narrator, Andy. As a Watson to Hobbes' Holmes he can be forgiven his cluelessness & as an Arthur Dent (who I quite sympathize with) to Hobbes' Ford Prefect, he can be forgiven his 'nervous nature'. But he is also a slacker, an ingrate & a freeloader. And he's "accident prone" mostly because he's careless, lazy & takes no responsibility for himself. He could contribute quite a bit to the household in which he finds himself, but even when he makes the rare attempt, it is usually abortive thru lack of preparation or inattention. I almost gave up on this book, but figuring that he seemed such a young man he might improve with exposure to the upstanding & compassionate Hobbes, I stuck it out to the end. And he did rise to the occasion when absolutely necessary. But I was mightily shocked when I found that he is supposed to be 37 years old! The scattering of references to his smothering mother, verbally abusive father & one single line about "what happened to [his] sister" (presumably tragic) weren't sufficient, for me, to counterbalance his unlikeability. Perhaps if more of his background had been interspersed in the beginning . . .With the indications towards the end of book 1 that Andy could improve, I was hopeful when I began book 2. But though "mostly harmless" he continues to be pretty thoroughly selfish & whining. And altho thots of better behavior occasionally cross his mind, he rarely acts on even the smallest, like thanking the housekeeper. I became rather adept at skimming the pages of his "oh pity me & when's my supper going to be". But it's still irritating enough that I will not be continuing the series.

I don’t remember how I happened on Wilkie Martin’s Inspector Hobbes series but I noticed “Inspector Hobbes and the Blood” on my kindle and it turned out to be exactly the right book at the right time. A light, urban fantasy was exactly what I needed. There are so many variations of “urban fantasy” it is difficult to know what to expect. I would call this “Rivers of London” meets Scott Meyer :) Like “Rivers”, this focuses on police work/mystery with an, um, “unusual” detective and a very human side kick in world populated by fantastic creatures. But it also has the silly humor, pratfalls of Meyer’s “The Authorities”. As you might expect, the mystery isn’t that mysterious- the fun is in the journey.Although I’m a big fan of Aaronovitch and Meyer, I’m a little surprised that I found this so addictive because the sidekick narrator, Alan, really isn’t very likeable. In addition to seeming more cursed than merely accident prone, he is often petty, cowardly, and mean spirited. But he does show an awareness of his failings. (I probably would have been more comfortable if he were a twenty year old rather than 37.) But addictive it is. I’ve already read the second in the series and started the third. Spoiler Alert- Alan improves with each book :)

This is a fun mystery. One is never sure how much is supernatural till close to the end. That makes it sound like a serious, frightening book, but it's actually very light-hearted, with a lot of humor. Much of the humor seems to just miss the mark, (which, judging from other reviews, may just be my taste. )Somewhat slow moving at first, and, as others have remarked, with the narrator being rather obnoxious (though he gets better as the book proceeds), it had me wondering if one of the villains was supernatural up until the end. The mystery itself is somewhat rambling, the author concentrating more upon the characters.I'd say this is a fun read, though slow in places. I'm going to buy the next one, because I think this series has a lot of potential, and with a slight bit of polishing, some of the jokes could be laugh out loud on the subway funny. My other reason for buying the book (and planning to go through the series) is that there are hints of an interesting backstory for some of the main characters, and I'm curious enough to keep reading to find out their true history. For a first novel (as far as I know, at least the first of a series), it held my attention, though I had to push through a few spots, and deal with my annoyance at the narrator. It certainly did make me want to buy the next book in the series.I can't really think of what to compare it to. It's sort of an urban fantasy combined with a British police procedural.

This particular series is like Port wine - it's an acquired taste. When I bought this first book in the series, I only managed to get through the first score or two of pages. I so disliked the chief character Andy Caplet that I almost stopped. Perhaps it's the English thing - - they like milk toast protagonists who come through in a pinch. I really disliked the guy...and still do (four books in); however, the rest of the characters are amazing and wonderful, from Inspector Hobbes (apparently a were of some sort) to Mrs. Goodfellow, to the rest of the cast. It's really difficult, however, to get over one's complete contempt for the principle character and so the four stars instead of five. E-gads, Mr. Martin, at least give Andy a pretend spine at some point in the series. Yes, I bough them all. They're addicting. They're like Pralines and Cream ice cream or Blanton's bourbon. Neither is good for you, but you enjoy yourself so much it doesn't really matter. In this first book we find out that vampires aren't real - - they just think they are.

This book by Harmony Raines shows that love can find you at any age. Simon is a fifty something old shifter who has come out of retirement to help at a Christmas auction to save the local animal shelter. Near the end he gets a whiff of his true mate, whom he has been waiting for his whole life but thought would never find. Gamma is a very pregnant human 40 year old who is on the run from a rich ex-boyfriend who is the father of her baby and who has decided wants her baby but not her. Gamma goes into the museum where the auction is taking place to earn up from the snow storm outside and rest for a few minutes. Simon catches a whiff of her sent & recognises Gamma is his true mate whom he has been waiting for. He is surprised to see that she is pregnant but that doesn't change his feelings. He can since she is scared & running from something and as her mate, he will protect her from any & everything. Having her bedtime stories as a child about shifters existing, she knows a little about them although she never believed that they really existed. She feels drawn to & safe around Simon but has been a strong, independent woman her whole life and most recently having to always be extra safe and on guard to protect the baby she is carrying, finds it had to trust him. There are several twists in this story and new details come out about Gemma's father's family, too. How is the enemy always so close behind her, is Gemma who she says she is, is Simon working for her ex, is the baby's father a shifter? All these and many more questions will be answered if you read this book. It is fast paced and you won't want to put the book down. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

After finishing his volunteer job as auctioneer at the benefit for the Bear Creek Animal Shelter, Simon heads for the restroom. Hiding in that restroom is a very pregnant Gemma. Simon recognizes Gemma as his mate and realizes that she is in trouble. He takes her home and learns that someone is trying to force Gemma to give up her baby once it is born. Together they will have to identify the danger and keep Gemma and the baby safe. This story is a heartwarming story about finding forever love in the midst of fear and desperation. It's a sweet, but sexy read. I highly recommend it. Happy reading!

Gemma was on the run and turned up in Bear Creek the day of the auction for the animal shelter. She was exhausted and was looking for a place to hide and get lost in, this was just perfect for her to escape and not be noticed. Simon was the auctioneer to raise money for the shelter. Gemma went to the bathroom and before she knew it a man was in the bathroom with her. She was afraid she had been found out but who was there and what did he want, would he hurt her and her precious bundle she was carrying????

Tried to tell the baby father she was pregnant, no go ,then bad things happened and a hateful txt. She runs to bear creek where her father is from, and meets her mate. Its a good thing her mother told her stories about shifter and accepts they are mates that quickly, ex didn't know she was pregnant and all that happen to her but his new love did and she was the one doing all the evils things. All forgiven and they share being parents to the baby.

Gemma is over forty, never married or pregnant, accidentally pregnant by a rather nasty rich playboy who wants her baby at all costs. No way will she allow her only hope for a family to be raised by such a tosser! Too close to her due date she takes the bus to the hometown of the father she never knew and unexpectedly meets the shifter who finds that she is his fated mate. Lots of twists and turns with a strong dose of suspense! Loved it!

The story is flat, the characters are flatter and the conclusion is flattest. With lots of time the author might be able to write a good book but this one missed.I would hope the author take this book and practice. Develop some depth to her characters and make the story less of a you know it feel. Story was jerky and jumped from point to point. The story itself was lacking depth and actual substance

It's always nice to read about older romance and happily ever after. It was good to see some of the characters from previous books interacting with the main characters in this book. I also enjoyed the surprise at the end of the book. It was time and money well spent.

I love Harmony Raines stories! I love how the characters work together from other stories. Harmony's stories can be funny, have a strong story theme, can make you cry but always have a happy ending. I can now say I have read them all!
