No wonder Dahl wrote such wonderfully awful characters as Ms. Trunchbull (sp?)--he had real-life inspiration! I read his account of getting his tonsils out to my 6th grade students each year to sell them on this book: with no anesthetic, his doctor said, "Open your mouth," and when Dahl did, he darted in with a scalpel and snick-snick, Dahl spit out two globs of flesh and a lot of blood. Well-ah, a tonsillectomy! And the scene of his sister taking the family for a drive in their first car! Oh my god! She didn't know how to turn it or stop it, but she let the little kids persuade her to go faster and faster! Bones are broken! It's nuts! And his teachers. Wow. Corporal punishment with a cane. I like to read the description of being whipped with a cane to my 6th graders when they complain about how strict we are on them so they can realize how good they actually have it. They're so aghast that they argue over who gets to read the whole book. Music to my ears.

Real life good reading. Funny, Compulsive, Driving, Observant. Dahl's own story. I just kept reading and enjoying it. Almost like a book in two parts but he joins them well. One springs from within another. This man knows how to write. I was so grateful to find this book so well written and edited. Not an easy combo to find these days. Excellent, and I don't say that lightly.

Fine book; excellent writing. This is the personal tale of a master storyteller with experiences that are ordinary, yet extraordinary. As a young man working in Africa, Dahl signs up for the air corps and finds himself flying planes he was never taught to fly in battles that were never planned to be. What is most exciting about this book is that real life is more dramatic than anything that a fiction writer could dream up. It is one of the top five books I have read this year, and would highly recommend it to anyone with a sense of adventure. It is hard to portray what it's like to be up there in a Hurricane with enemy fighters after you, but Dahl does it with aplomb. I will wait a while and read this one again!

Another writer once told me that one of the most important elements to be found in a memoir is a "likeable" narrator. Roald Dahl is perhaps one of the MOST likeable of narrators. Modest to a fault and blessed with a very sly and subtle sense of humor, the story Dahl tells in GOING SOLO, his sequel to BOY, is perhaps one of the most readable memoirs of modern times. His story of the quick and almost informal training he received at a flying school in Africa shortly after Great Britain entered WWII, is hair-raising and nearly impossible to believe, except you do believe, because you trust this man. At six foot six inches tall, Dahl was physically quite unsuited to be a fighter pilot, noting that when seated in the various planes he flew, his knees were nearly under his chin and he had to hunch over to fit beneath the plane's canopy. But fly he did, even after surviving one horrific crash in the desert early on in his career as an RAF pilot. He sustained a very bad concussion (which was to come back to haunt him and finally "invalid" him out of service nearly two years later) and had his face bashed in. As he explained to his mother in a letter: "My nose was bashed in ... and the ear nose and throat man pulled my nose out of the back of my head and shaped it and now it looks just as before except that it's a little bent about ..." Dahl went on to fly many combat missions in North Africa and Greece, usually against vastly superior odds, but somehow he managed to survive until the middle of 1941, when the migraine headaches caused by the aforementioned crash made him unfit for further flying. Dahl's nearly laconic and completely unself-conscious manner of writing about the things he did - absolutely heroic things - made me think of Sam Hynes's WWII memoir of his missions in the Pacific theater. Both writers downplay the importance of their roles. They never speak of heroics or derring-do, only about the importance of their comrades, doing the jobs they were trained to do and trying their best to simply stay alive. This was an enormously satisfying, moving and often hilarious tale. After reading these two slim volumes of memoirs by Dahl, I do wish he had written another. I have ordered his slim collection of stories about WWII already. What a wonderful writer - and gentleman - Roald Dahl was. - Tim Bazzett, author of SOLDIER BOY and LOVE, WAR & POLIO

Boy and Going Solo are delightful books! Mr. Dahl writes smoothly and true. There is never any confusion for the reader. The sentences tumble from his pen, flowing in harmony across the pages as you see his life unfold. And what an interesting life! Do read it! You'll be happy you did!

I loved these books, and I highly recommend them. Before I read Roald Dahl's autobiographical books, "Boy," and "Going Solo," I thought that he wrote only children's books. What a pleasant surprise !He was a very talented writer who really knew how to tell a fascinating story, with all the wonderful details that keep a reader interested. I only wish he had written a complete autobiography.

Remarkably good WWII memoir. Dahl here is nothing like his kiddie books. "Solo" is tough, honest, and often downright grim. No romanticized WWII ace flyer bunk here!.

We have the printed and Audio versions of this book. Dan stevens does a very good job of narrating. My 9 year olds were at the edge of their seat listening.

So this is a first: I do not remember requesting an ARC of this book. I suspect the wishbone button is at play here but, since NetGalley doesn’t have a way of tracking wishes, who knows? It was a stressful summer and fall, and I may have done all sorts of crazy things on the internet that I don’t remember.Which is my roundabout way of saying that, despite the abundance of katanas and severed heads, SAMURAI RISING isn’t the sort of book I normally gravitate to. I don’t read a ton of middle grade, and military history mostly bores me to tears. (I’d call SAMURAI RISING equal parts biography and military history/strategy. But since Yoshitsune is mostly known for his inspired military leadership, that tips the scales more heavily toward the latter.) Though I did skim some of the more strategy-heavy battle scenes (the lack of maps in the ARC made them even more difficult for me to envision), overall I was pleasantly surprised: SAMURAI RISING is a rather engaging read.Rife with political intrigue, shifting loyalties, and back-stabbing, SAMURAI RISING often reads like a centuries-old soap opera. Danger comes not just from rival samurai bloodlines (such as the warring Minamoto and Taira clans that take center stage here), but from within one’s own family as well: nephews are hired to assassinate their uncles, brothers betray brothers, and parents may murder their own children to (re)claim power. Ironically, among Yoshitsune’s small band of closest friends, there was not a single Minamoto to be found; and, despite all he did to help his half-brother Yoritomo ascend to power, Yoshitsune was cast aside – similar to how the Emperor treated their father decades before.Yoshitsune’s is the ultimate underdog story. After his father’s defeat, then-baby Yoshitsune’s life was spared, but on the condition that he be raised as a monk, far away from the politics of Kyoto. Consequently, he didn’t begin his samurai training until he was fifteen, when he fled his impending religious vows and the life of tedium and anonymity they promised. By comparison, most samurai were finishing up a decade’s worth of training at this age and would be considered war-ready, or nearly so. Likewise, as a member of the opposition force, Yoshitsune often fought with smaller armies and in disadvantageous conditions – such as the famed cliffside attack on the Taira fortress at Ichi-no-Tani. Yet he always managed to rally his men to victory.(Until he didn’t. If you’re already familiar with Japanese history, you probably know how Yoshitsune’s story ends. I’m not, and it came as a huge surprise. Nearly 40% of this book is comprised of back matter, a fact not immediately obvious in the ARC owing to the lack of a TOC. Thus I didn’t realize I’d reached the end until the last page. To say that I didn’t see it coming is an understatement.)Even so, it’s disconcerting to see Yoshitsune positioned as the unequivocal hero. In their quest for power and riches, the samurai and monarchy consistently trample on those belonging to lower social classes. As they rampaged across the countryside, samurai ransacked homes, stole food and livestock to feed their armies, and kidnapped peasants to serve them – all while demanding taxes to fund a lifestyle at turns lavish and bloodthirsty. Turner reports that Yoshitsune was a little more humane than most, yet this didn’t stop him from setting fire to trees, fields – and even the homes of commoners – in order to light a midnight attack on the Taira:“For a warrior Yoshitsune was unusually civilized in his dealings with common people. He made sure that his warriors behaved well in Kyoto – no thievery or bullying happened on his watch. Yet he remained a samurai. Samurai didn’t see themselves as protectors of the common people; a peasant had no more “rights” than an ox. So the fires were lit.”Meticulously researched, Turner bases much of her narrative on two sources: THE TALE OF THE HEIKE, as translated by Helen McCullough and Royall Tyler, and the AZUMA KAGAMI (MIRROR OF EASTERN JAPAN). Yoshitsune “is clearly one of the HEIKIE’S heroes,” which could also explain the bias. That, and no one wants to root for Goliath.Given the age and general sketchiness of the original texts, it’s no surprise that Turner’s retelling sometimes lacks depth and emotion; centuries dead and buried, their voices gone with them, Turner is often left to speculate about her subjects’ motivations, feelings, and innermost desires. What we’re left with is the who, what, when, and where, but the whys are a little harder to come by.In this vein, women are predictably absent from the story – save for Yoshitsune’s lover Shizuka, who’s an all-around bad-ass. (Turner describes her as the bravest character in the whole darn book, and I’d be hard-pressed to disagree.) In her copious Author’s Notes, Turner includes a section on the status of women, which I appreciate; but I would’ve liked to have learned even more about Yoritomo’s widow, Hōjō Masako, who had her own son Yoriie strangled in order to prevent him allying with political factions she opposed. As Turner so wryly points out:“Minamoto rule of Japan ended on this fratricidal note. In Yoritomo had left a strong and loyal brother alive to protect his heirs, would history have turned out differently? [...]“The Hōjō family was – wait for it! – a minor branch of the Taira.”Still, SAMURAI RISING is an excellent choice for kids who aren’t too keen on history – but might be swayed with a little action and bloodshed.** Full disclosure: I received a free electronic ARC for review through NetGalley. **

You can tell by how big the glossary, foreword, and author's notes are that the facts about Yoshitsune's life was well researched and yet this is a very harsh read. The author's can't quite come to terms to how to write about the Samurai's life, it's a bit biographical, there is some novelization but it's not quite either. This reads like a dinner conversation about Yoshitsune's life, the prose is very basic and sentences are often written as how a person might speak, I recall one sentence even has a "-wait for it!-" in the middle of a statement. It feels contrived and dumbed down, instead of writing "we can imagine during this time that the samurai might have..." just go ahead and write a historical novel, lots of authors manage to make great novels out of historical facts and a bit of imagination. This book however falls short of writing an objective biography or a great historical novel. I felt like I was being lectured about Yoshitsune's life by a kindergarten teacher.

Highly suggest this for a light quick action packed read. Well written, author has a light sense of humor that keeps the story from getting too heavy

Normally reading books is a chore for me. But this book was different, I couldn't put this book down. I highly recommend it if you are a fan of Japanese history and reading about the Samurai.

I am not at all into murder and mayhem, but I loved the book and could not put it down. I should confess that I purchased the book because the artist is a friend and also because another friend is writing a book connected to 19th century Samurai. I was thoroughly delighted with this book and have shared scans of the cover with several other friends.

Little boy I purchased this for (my nephew) love it! He said it was the best Christmas gift ever.

I just wish it was 300 pages longer. appreciated the endnotes. gotta love good endnotes.

Grandson loves book....

This is a great adaptation of the "Heike" for young readers. I highly recommend it!

About the Author

Nate Berkus began his career in design at a young age. With his allowance (dedicated to buying things for his bedroom) and his mother's influence (she's also a decorator), Nate began a lifelong passion for design. After graduating from Lake Forest College, he took a job with Leslie Hindman Auctioneers. It was from this position, as well as an internship with Dominique Aurientis in Paris, France, that he really developed a love for and good knowledge of the decorative arts and furniture. Nate then went on to form Nate Berkus Associates in 1995 at the age of twenty-four. The firm grew to include projects for Wolfgang Puck's Spago, Barney's New York, W hotels, as well as a prestigious list of private homes and clients. In 2001, Nate was invited to make over a small space for The Oprah Winfrey Show. From there, Nate became a featured design expert for the show and continued on to become a regular contributor toO at Home magazine.

I love Nate Berkus and I love his work, which is why I purchased this book. However, the content is more Room Design 101, with some lovely photography. I've collected some beautiful design books over the years but this doesn't add to my existing knowledge or ability. It might be a perfect gift for a recent college grad or newlyweds setting out to start their first home.

Nice book. Great perspective

I'm not a decorator. I don't have an eye for colors and what matches and what doesn't. I must admit that every home that I've had, my mother has decorated for me. Nate Berkus and his book have allowed me to grow up and begin to decorate my house on my own. His ideas are so simple, but with an enormous impact. He details every aspect of home decorating to include painting as well as how to decorate mantels, bookshelves, and other places that sometimes aren't considered in home decorating. The pictures are very beautiful and full of color. If you are a fan of Oprah and especially Nate, then this book is a must have.

As a fan and biased reviewer (based on that fact) I enjoyed this book very much. The book seems true to the inspirations and styles that Nate represents in all facets of his brand. Did it transform me as a "wanna be" designer, no, but did I enjoy the books amazing photographs, approachable nature and overall experience and thirst for design inspiration, YES. A stunning book for the Nate fans out there who won't be disappointed...but remeber it is a book and not going to give you the ability to be Nate, just some great insights to create our own style journey, so enjoy....

Berkus has nice taste, but I read more in the editorial coverage of this book than is in the book. Lots of nice photos, but nothing terribly new. There are much better books, like the Domino book, or Apartment Therapy.....

What can I say? I think that Nate Berkus is one of the most talented decorators in his industry! I am collecting his books so I believe I still have one to go!

Its pretty basic on colors. Did not find it too helpful. I have come up with better decorating ideas!

I agree with a loot of the reviews on this not being the most brainy book. Most of the comments in the book are, at best, clichés. But the pictures are great, even those of Nate in those weird, unnatural poses. The book does however present some very interesting, and in some cases even innovative design solutions. The style is very Nate, kind of modern-classics. Totally worth the cash, who reads interior books anyways?

From the Publisher

From the camera lucida to the latest in digital image making and computer manipulation, photographic technology has dramatically changed throughout its nearly 200-year history, as succinctly explained and powerfully illustrated in A World History of Photography. Thanks to the unique immediacy with which photography captures perspective and history, the popularity and use of the camera spread rapidly around the globe. Today, photography is ubiquitous: from newspapers and fashion magazines to billboards and the film industry, cultures worldwide have embraced this malleable artistic medium for a limitless variety of purposes. Naomi Rosenblum's classic text investigates all aspects of photography--aesthetic, documentary, commercial, and technical--while placing photos in their historical context. Included among the more than 800 photographs by men and women are both little-known and celebrated masterpieces, arranged in stimulating juxtapositions that illuminate their visual power. Authoritative and unbiased, Rosenblum's chronicle of photography both chronologically and thematically traces the evolution of this still-young art form. Exploring the diverse roles that photography has played in the communication of ideas, Rosenblum devotes special attention to topics such as portraiture, documentation, advertising, and photojournalism, and to the camera as a means of personal artistic expression. The revised fourth edition includes updates on technical advances as well as a new chapter on contemporary photographers. Armed with the expressive vigor of its images, this thorough and accessible volume will appeal to all.

89% of the people reviewing this book gave it a "favorable" rating, ie. 4 and 5 star ratings combined. I include myself in that count.Look, other reviewers, this is a book about the history (let me repeat: history) of photography, and it does it extremely well. Yes, it is a textbook. So what? That is hardly a condemnation. If you are interested in a deeper understanding of the development of photography, this is a good purchase. If you are just interested in pretty photosand don't want to read, go elsewhere. Scott Kelby will greet you with open arms. On the other hand, there are some very fascinating photos in this book that I have never seen before.I would buy this book again. I have gained a deeper understanding and appreciation of photography as a result of reading it.

This one book contains so much! Great summaries of photographic history, methods, styles, and photographers.

Great quality book, fast shipping. Finished the college course and the book looks brand new still. I typically wear out books very easily.

This is an extremely well written book on the history of photography, and lavishly illustrated with reproductions of photographs over the entire span of the medium. Rosenblum is very knowledgeable, and has a subtle sense of humor demonstrated in various comments throughout the text. The writing has frequent footnote references for interested readers, but they are not distracting since the actual references are placed all together at the end of the book. I would recommend this book to those interested in reading a comprehensive overview of photography, or for those who are just interested in an excellent reference.

The updated and largely expanded work by Professor Naomi Rosenblum, I share with colleagues globally. I continues what the late preeminent historian and curator, Beaumont Newhall began at the Museum of Modern Art in 1937, in the form of the first 100 year exhibition of the medium. After he began, he continued to build upon the global research in further editions, encouraging others to add further in the future. Rosenblum's further developments and research continue to add significantly the field in many ways. It is a key reference for the art of photography by any standard.

I have no other materials to compare this to however, I used this for my MFA and it is a very comprehensive encyclopedia on the history of photography.

A dependable survey globally with detailed oversight and reference points. Share with students and colleagues internationally. Somewhat limited on the history of modern photography in art and related contributions as photomontage, which become more relevant in the new century of technologies based on ink on paper without the darkroom, nevertheless a primer of significance with Newhall's groundbreaking history.

Pretty worthwhile to buy! It is my required textbook for history course. After sinking in it,I almost feel like go through with it even though reading is not something that I am accustomed to. Good pictures and adorable contexts.

but not due to any fault of the book. In fact, I offer this point as very high praise. It took so long due to several simultaneous big projects in my family and business life; sometimes I could only manage a page or so at a time, sometimes no pages at all for several days. But the content of this book is so interesting, so relevant to the big patterns of Western history, that I was committed to reading every single word of it. As one specific example, I knew there was competition among Italian city-states, especially between Venice and Genoa, but I had no understanding of the depth, breadth, and violence of those struggles. As another, learning in detail the role of Venice nicely fleshes out one's knowledge of the third and fourth crusades. I am now reading Empires of the Sea, which was already on the shelves of my personal library, and now, having direct appreciation of this very fine author, I will without hesitation buy and read whatever he writes. If Mr. Crowley thinks it's relevant and interesting, chances are high I will too. I know from first-hand experience the time and labor of love that goes into such a writing project; your efforts, sir, are appreciated.

I primarily read this book to flesh out my understanding of the sack of Contantinople during the fourth crusade. Most books with a Byzantine focus seem to imply that it all fell on Enrico Dandolo; the wily old Doge with a grudge. This book does an outstanding job of giving intimate details of the fourth crusade. Crowley weaves together the intrigues, politics, and attitudes that led to this seminal event in Venetian (and Christian) history. The attack on Constantinople and the sack of the city are given in great, almost painful detail. What I found more fascinating is the after effects of the fourth crusade. How Venice controlled key islands in the Aegean that corresponded to their economic and strategic goals. It was all about trade by sea, and it is absolutely amazing to realize how focused the Venetians were. I think Crowley does a good job of demonstrating that Venice was the protoype for global economic thinking. He also demonstrates convincingly that Venice was also the prototype for colonialism backed by naval power. No, they did not always treat their subject states well since the goals were economic and strategic. Finally, the incremental rise of Ottoman sea power is contrasted with the slow decline of the Venetian state as the dominant naval power. I think Crowley did a great job in showing how the forgotten battles such as Negroponte had a huge impact on the morale and identity of Venice. My only complaint is the ending of the book. It is almost as if Mr. Crowley assumes that the reader's history must be adequate enough to know what happens next. The implication being that Venice continues to decline ultimately resulting in the horses of St. Mark's ending up in France as Napoleon takes northern Italy. Further, Crowley wrote the excellent book Empires of the Sea: The Siege of Malta, the Battle of Lepanto, and the Contest for the Center of the World. The events of this battle are only 50 or 60 years after the end of this book. Why not include more details linking to this battle and the events leading to it? I mean, he skims some of these events such as Cypress being taken by the Ottoman Empire. What is one more chapter between friends... right? All in all a great book that I enjoyed reading very much.

This book cleared up quite a few mysteries about Venice. There are frequent descriptions from original sources by contemporary chroniclers that bring the tumultuous history of Venice to life. I did not expect this book to be a page-turner but for me it was.The writing is clear and concise. I've been to Venice several times but this last visit was immeasurably enhanced by the visceral and dramatic knowledge contained herein. You'll never feel quite as casual strolling around Piazza San Marco, or shopping on the Rialto bridge after reading this book.Kudos to the author.

Author Roger Crowley has a solid command of his subject. He knows his oats. And he presents a large, complex history in a way that is at once accessible to the average reader (like me) and very interesting. He keeps us engaged.I was disappointed when the book was over. I wanted another few centuries of learning. One caution-I got the kindle version. At the end of the book and many many pages of period paintings and maps and such. I would rather have a physical book in my hand as the black and white shot of a magnificent painting isn't as cool.I have a much better understanding of Venice as a culture and as a city. There isn't anyplace like it.

I had been exploring the history of the Ottoman Empire right up to its fall as a result of the first world war. In the process I discovered that the Ottomans and Venice were engaged in a power struggle for several hundred years. Having recently visited Venice and its museums last November I was also intrigued by how this small enclave had been so powerful in the past. As a result of these issues I was looking forward to reading this book.I was not disappointed. It is well written and very easy to read. It filled in many gaps in my knowledge of history. It was also interesting to discover the extent to which the 4th Crusade was a major contributor the the decline of the Byzantine empire and the ultimate fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans. The fact that that crusade mainly ended up targeting christian city's that were regarded as competition by Venice was also enlightening as was Venice's constant war with Genoa .A well written fascinating book.
