This book is good, but because it covers a wide range, the detail of each model is less than in some of the 'original' series.

I'm in the process of restoring a 1947 Bentley Mark VI and this book has been very helpful in details about the car that I have not seen elsewhere. The pictures are outstanding quality, and although it is not intended to be an A to Z restoration book, it is very informative historically.

I am by no means a collector of RR / Bentley cars, but I am looking to get an S-1 or S-2, and I found this book a source of info to at least know what should be found on a properly maintained car, and what would have been non-stock modifications.

Wonderful resource for owners. Now I better understand the design and features of the R-Type.

This a nice RR book with lots of production data and the updates throughout the model years. But NOT as a restorers guide? There is absolutely not a single word in it on how to restore this car. It's a waste of money to purchase this book for restoration purposes. It's a nice coffee table book that's all.

There is a charm in his writing that will make you an admirer of his writings, and this book is no exception. It is Brysonâ€™s long love letter to the small island he has fallen for head over heels with sincerity and loyalty with kisses and promise to come back to her.

Great book if you love people who love themselves to an extreme. Also a great read if you hate the United States, especially southerners. Perfect for the "open-minded, progressive" types who look down their noses at anyone who doesn't behave and think exactly like themselves. Also, a great gift for anyone who likes books that pretend to be about people doing something, but then are really just about quitting doing that thing before they really get started.Here's a good example of the writing, "See, the Army Corps of Engineers aren't really good at building. One time this thing that they built broke. Moving on...I like Great Britain because there aren't that many Americans there. See, I really hate myself, so I take it out on all other Americans instead if just looking in the mirror and admitting that I am a sad sack."

Right. Well this book completely derailed my reading list for the summer. I was supposed to be catching up on Criminal Justice texts and memorizing terms from Barron's Law Dictionary... Instead, I purchased Notes from a Small Island and things went out of control from there. It is literally the first time in my life that reading a book made me laugh out loud and uncontrollably, to TEARS. This gem was highly recommended by English friends as a must-read before I make the move to the UK for my year of study abroad this fall. I obliged. Not even halfway through the book, I decided to order more of his books right away in order to have them ready when I finished with this one. That is how my Bill Bryson binge began. Currently I am on my third book (by order of what arrives in the mail first) called A Short History of Nearly Everything.Bryson is merciless in his observations of British towns and the British in general, but it's all in the spirit of that endearingly cynical, self-deprecating, quintessential British humour. (see what I did there?!) His way of writing puts you at ease and it's like a cross between travel guide, government & history lesson and stand up comedy, as Bryson loves to go off on barely relevant and hilarious tangents. You never get the sense that he is trying too hard or being pretentious, either. A bonus is the glossary he provides in the back of the book for British words like "dual carriageway" and "naff."The fact that it was recommended to me by English and Welsh friends is testament to the authenticity of Bryson's observations and his comedic genius. Seriously recommend this read if you're an Anglophile or just enjoy a good, fun read.

This is magazine quality gift wrap, folded with a perforation to pull each piece away from the spine, which just doesnâ€™t work that well. Resolution of the printing is disappointing.

This paper is sooooooooo pretty! I get so many compliments when I show up with a gift wrapped in this paper, which is great because I'm a terrible gift wrapper!! And I really like that it's in book form - makes it super easy to store. The only negative is that it's not very big. I wish it was either a little bigger, or that there were multiples of the same sheet so that I can continue wrapping bigger gifts in the same paper.

So nice to have such beautiful paper that is also practical. It is really convenient to have gift paper that can be stored on a bookshelf as opposed to paper rolls that need special accommodations. And, the paper is absolutely beautiful. Unique and special. Love it!

This has been a very helpful book so far! After reading all that Barbados has to offer we booked a trip! It offers lots of tips and insider info! Better than other books we have purchased. Includes a pretty awesome map too!

This little book was perfect for sticking in pocket or purse and had loads of detailed information about all the great places to go in Barbados. The map had enough detail to guide us. The only shortcoming was a lack of bus directions, and this is a country with great bus service. We found the bus schedules on the internet.

We haven't been to Barbados yet, but this'll guide seems like a good one for the first-time visitor" nice photos and good maps.

The book is OK, however the plastic cover of the book (which covers the map) fell apart immediately when I first opened the book. It might not be a big deal, but I still feel unsatisfied for this brand-new book.

I've not completed the book but it looks to be ideal for travel. Take it with you, refer to it often. Plastic cover to protect, very informative, great map and pictures.

We chose this book to be our tour guide while in Barbados. Very valuable resource. We used the maps, restaurant info and attraction info all the time! Never went anywhere without it. Its size made it very easy to keep in a small bag and was very portable! An excellent resource!

Disturbing but ultimately uplifting due to the resiliency of the Japanese Americans and the practice and promise of Buddhism.

Professor Williams has created a masterwork of lyrical scholarship that is compelling and revealing. His religious viewpoint of Japanese and Buddhist discrimination beginning in the late 19th Century, culminating with Executive Order 9066, and martial law/internment during WWII, offers a fresh perspective on a dark chapter in American history. As someone interested in Zen I've heard that some Zen teachers were swept up in the internment camps. Specifically that one of Robert Aitken's teachers was placed in a camp and that he had a hard time while there. This book gives more insight into the specific hardships that people like him faced.One of the most interesting facts I learned is that the US government not only targeted Japanese Americans who happened to be Buddhist, but that their Buddhism was seen being in conflict with US loyalties.Williams also uses his knowledge of Buddhist teachings (he himself is an ordained Soto Zen priest) to give context to how people facing these hard times used their faith to make it through. He draws a line from Dogen's advice to the Zen cook to internees preparing of their meals with great care.

Duncan Williamsâ€™ meticulously researched history of the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II will be an eye-opener for most readers. It is well known that â€œracial prejudice, war hysteria and failure of political leadershipâ€ within the US government and the general public motivated the incarceration of over 110,000 West Coast Japanese and Japanese Americans during the World War II. However, it is less well known that Japanese-Americansâ€™ practice of Buddhism distinguished them from the majority Christian population and identified them as a national security risk.Williams covers a wide swath of history from the governmentâ€™s pre-war plans to roundup Buddhist priests and Japanese community leaders, to the incarceration of the entire West Coast Japanese American population, life in the camps, and the eventual release of the â€œprisoners.â€ In these stories, we see that while Buddhism led to their incarceration, it was these same spiritual beliefs that helped the incarcerees survive their long ordeal. Although the incarceration mainly affected the Japanese on the West Coast, Williams provides details on the situation in Hawaii where many of the Buddhist priests were arrested immediately after Pearl Harbor and shipped to the mainland, leaving the community without its spiritual leaders at a perilous time.Outside of the camps, Williams sheds light on the â€œregistryâ€ or the strategic and voluntary military participation of the Nisei in the European and Pacific war theaters; many serving as translators, code breakers, and interrogators whose efforts may have shortened the war by as much as two years. The story of Richard Sakakida, who was dropped into Manila during WWII to spy on the Japanese, is a particularly exciting one. The heroism of the Nisei in the 442nd Regiment is also well documented. Williams highlights their efforts to cling to their Buddhist beliefs in an army that did not recognize their faith. Many of these troops made their sacrifices all while their families back home were still incarcerated.This tragic tale provides details on the â€œbad guysâ€ (they are mostly, but not exclusively guys) who planned and implemented the mass incarceration of an innocent population, as well as the heroes and heroines, such as Julius Goldwater, the cousin of Barry Goldwater, and the Governor of Colorado who offered sanctuary to many Japanese Americans.While originating in meticulous academic research, the book does not read like an academic study. The authorâ€™s writing style is straightforward and easy to read. The book is illustrated with emotional black and white photographs of the period. We learn about the Buddhist religion through a number of poignant verses written by incarcerated Buddhist monks and the retelling of ancient sutras. When I was finished reading the book I wanted to learn more about the fate of the Japanese Americans after the war and the evolution of Buddhism in America.This book is a valuable read for anyone interested in the World War II incarceration of the Japanese Americans. It shines a bright light on the role that Buddhism played both in fomenting the removal of the community from the West Coast but also in helping the communities survive their ordeal. And it is a cautionary tale because the struggle for religious freedom is still not over. In the end Williams emphasizes that this period should serve as a reminder that America is built on the promise of freedom of religion, even if that religion is not a part of mainstream society. This history of mass incarceration is sad, but the triumph of human spirit, ably described by Williams, is uplifting. I highly recommend this book to history buffs, students of American Buddhism and anyone interested in religious freedom in America.

Both the individual stories of people caught up in events beyond their control, and the general theme of the perceived danger of immigrants and their religious traditions, are compelling and relevant. This book offers not only a new perspective on Buddhism in America, but also a historical perspective on current concerns over immigrants and their "dangerous" religious traditions.

I've just finished "American Sutra" and am stunned with the level of scholarship, sensitivity, and interpretation of this crucial piece of the history of Japanese American WWII concentration camps. For most of us, we always assumed that race was the single driving factor behind the incarceration of the Japanese off the West Coast during WWII, but this book has made it obvious that Buddhism played a major part in how this decision was made to grossly abuse these American's civil liberties.

This book tells such an important perspective on why religion mattered in the wake of Pearl Harbor. This is a deeply insightful, important, and compassionate book that explores an egregious violation of the First Amendment of the Constitution.

About the Author

Born in Ethiopia, Lebawit Lily Girma was nine months old when her parents moved to the West African country of CÃ´te d'Ivoire. A decent enough way to choose a destination, but not a lot of info on each specific location. Info on Ambergris Caye changes so quickly, it's difficult for a book like this to keep up. I considered tearing out and taking just the sections I needed, but ultimately decided to leave it behind and use wifi when I could on location. The maps are useful and the general info is good. Attractive cover.

Never new there were so many cages. Information very helpful. Been to Belize and was looking for new adventures.

I used this book for a trip to Belize in December 2018 and found it so helpful. The information was detailed and specific, and I learned about some really cool places I would otherwise never have heard of (there was almost no information on some of them online, so this really was the only way to learn about some of the incredible experiences I ended up having). Highly recommend!

This is beautifully written and laid out. The photos make you feel like you are there. I cannot wait to go to Belize~

My only connection to the subject matter was living in New York for 15 years (25 years ago) and never paying attention to the hospital. If you have any interest at all in the history of NYC, hospitals, medicine, social programs, government corruption, advancements in medical research, disease control or decades of devoted service, read this book. Get engrossed, get enlightened, get educated. You'll also get entertained.

I'd always associated Bellevue with an insane asylum, but apparently I got that idea from movies and stand-up comedians. Today, only 1/3 of Bellevue patients receive psychiatric treatment, and those with severe cases are sent elsewhere.Bellevue began as a mansion that was converted to an almshouse and more famously as the go-to hospital for yellow fever patients. Later it became the haven for any patient who couldn't afford medical care, and it still is.Bellevue should also receive credit for many medical innovations, including the horse and buggy ambulance, forensic medicine and pathology.They took the tough cases. New York City was the center of the AIDS epidemic, and Bellevue took most of them before there was any kind of treatment.They were ready for Ebola victims before they even got one; when they did, he was a doctor, and they saved his life. Bellevue was there when Sandy struck, and a retaining wall collapsed, flooding its basement, where gasoline was stored to fuel its back-up generators on the thirteenth floor. Nurses, orderlies and doctors hauled gasoline up the stairs to keep the generators operating until the hospital could be evacuated. All thirty-seven elevators were down. Once more doctors, nurses, police men, firemen and the national guard spent a day and a night removing 700 patients to safety. Nobody died.So . . . where does the insane asylum myth come from? That would be from Nellie Bly who wrote a series on Bellevue for Joseph Pulitzer's WORLD. She later wrote a book about her experience, TEN DAYS IN A MAD HOUSE, most of which occurred on Blackwell's Island where the serious cases were sent. She did see some seedy looking characters at Bellevue, but that's because they almost never turn anyone away.Bellevue has also gotten some bad press at times. A doctor was murdered there. She was killed by a man who'd been living in a janitor's closet for several days. Another man had been living in the basement for two weeks. Yes, Bellevue was a haven for the homeless at times. It was the only place they could go. But security was seriously stepped up after the murder.Bellevue has also been the go-to place for medical students to get practical experience. For years they had a mutual relationship with Colgate, Columbia, and NYU medical schools. There was almost no disease they wouldn't be exposed to at Bellevue, and the hospital never went begging for applicants.As the Sandy episode shows, these people are heroes, and the American public doesn't even know it. New York City government is also heroic. Through the years, they've spent millions keeping the hospital for the destitute open. Those governments include republican, democratic, even Tammany Hall, but they all agreed that Bellevue was a necessity, a shining beacon signifying that we have a responsibility to treat the less fortunate.

One of few books I didn't buy on Amazon, I wanted to write about it because it is such a great read. Tons of fascinating backstory here. Bellevue has a unique identity among hospitals and this book explains why. You will gain insight into the history of New York City, and effects of the various waves of immigration upon the growth of NC. Also, the author offers concise, riveting descriptions of the development of public health. An account of why Bellevue's devotion to indigent patients gave its staff the expertise to overcome its perpetual lack of funding. This book is a delight to read, and I will now turn to the author's earlier book, Polio.

Much more than a history of Bellevue....a fascinating chronicle of medical history, immigration history, political history....I loved this book. Great interview on NPR prompted me to buy it.

This was a very interesting account of the history of medicine and how it evolved over the years. The only reason why I gave this book four stars instead of five is a feel the title is somewhat misleading. While some of this book involves details of the day-to-day activities at Bellevue, those who pick up this book looking for details of the goings-on at Bellevue and only at Bellevue, might be disappointed as there is a lot of focus on other organizations, diseases, New York City, etc., that don't necessarily involve Bellevue. Some may also choose to read this book because the hospital is known for its mental healthcare, but this book does not have a large focus on this aspect. Nonetheless, this is a great read, especially for the lay person who does not have a background in medicine, but is interested in its history. Recommended.

My grandmother worked at Bellevue in the early 1900s and for a variety of reasons I have been back and forth for some seventy years. In the mid 50s it resembles a classic 19th Century insane asylum with poorly kept facilities. Today it is exemplary. It is one of the classic public hospitals and remains that way, serving a broad spectrum of patients.The book is wonderfully written in that it gives both a history of Bellevue as well as the development of the other hospitals in New York. Each had their historical beginnings in a religious group from Protestant to Catholic to Jewish. But it was Bellevue which managed to have its doors open to all.The author presents this up and down history in an exceptionally readable manner and places it in context with the other institutions in New York. This is definitely a worthwhile read for those interested in New York as well as the development of health care.

I travel a lot and am a faithful purchaser of Lonely Planet guides. It was extremely helpful to get the eBook version of the HK & Macau travel guide and have it with me on my iPad, so I didn't have to lug around a physical book with me, as I was only bringing my iPad. There were some pros & cons to it, though. I'll leave this review short:Pros:Search capabilitiesHighlightingOther user highlighting which allows you a crowd-sourced way of seeing hot spotsCons:Horrible mapsDifficult to navigate through -- I found the paperback editions much easier to flip through with an index, even though the eBook edition had a search capability; I found myself kind of lostI am new to the eBook thing, so take my review with a grain of salt, but overall I did like it, that's why I gave it 4 stars. I will continue to purchase the Lonely Planet eBook guides rather than the paperbacks, so I can get a better handle on how they function. It's much easier! I couldn't find any sections in this book for "off the beaten track" like what used to be in Lonely Planet, so I was a bit disappointed.

We recently took this book and the Groovy Map on a 6 day trip to HK/Macau. This book was our go-to reference while in the hotel room, but we usually left it behind because it's kind of heavy to lug around. The maps are really small, but are useful when you take the time to really study them. Most of our dining suggestions came from TripAdvisor and the Groovy Map, as this book is kind of out of date. I understand a newer one is on the way, though. We did use this for our one day in Macau and I must say that the Macau Island walking tour was frustrating and confusing. It took us past tons of boring sights and it was hard to use (lacking step by step directions and instead referencing street names without telling us North, South, Left, Right, etc.). All in all, a pretty good reference. I'm glad we had it with us.

My husband and I used this book for our first trip to hong kong and macau. As usual with Lonely Planet it gave a good overview of both cities but as with any guide book, use it as a reference, not a step by step manual. The maps, particularly the pull out Hong Kong map were quite useful though it needs to be updated to reflect the changes to the MTR system.Hong Kong is a great city to wander around and this book details lots of different sites that you might otherwise miss. The walking tours of Macau were interesting, but the descriptions of the various sites along the way were a bit brief.

Wonderful book. After using other types of city guides, I definitely like Lonely Planet the best. I was able to take walking tours on my own without expensive guides. Maps are accurate and very detailed. Usage of the subway was a breeze thanks to this book. Definitely recommend Lonely Planet for all of their city guides. I bought 3 different ones while visiting asia and all did not disappoint.

As opposed to other Lonely Planet guides, this one is shoddily researched and edited. Its central problem is that it's outdated by years, even though it's dated March 2010: its subway plan doesn't even show the East Rail Line, which has been there for years; the Alan Chan shop is listed as in the Peninsula Arcade, where it hasn't been in a good many years, and the guide doesn't list the Elements Mall, one of the most important newer malls in Kowloon. Because of constant mistakes like that, I wasted time and ended up in the wrong places several times during a visit to Hong Kong in November 2010.The book is also simply not carefully edited. On p. 138, it has the sentence "They can also be hired from two bike kiosks" - but there's no earlier sentence that "they" or "also" refers to. You have to figure out from the term "bike kiosks" that its bicyle rentals they're talking about. This is the kind of stuff that a copy editor should catch. A minor problem, perhaps, but it reflects the incredible shoddiness of research that characterizes this guide as a whole. A big disappointment for me, since I've had better experiences with other guides in the series.

I usually love Lonely Planet but this one became increasingly frustrating as the index did not match the page numbers. Good history and recommendations but as a reference using the the index, forget it! The map is really not good enough to warrant purchasing this guide over any other.

This guidebook is very thorough. My daughter is studying abroad in Hong Kong this semester and I purchases the book so I would know what she is talking about. I have found this book to be very helpful even though I am not there. The maps are excellent and the book itself gives great information and background. Very informative section on Macau which was very helpful since she used the week off during Lunar New Year to spend a couple days there. Overall one of the most complete guidebooks you will find. Also purchased the Eyewitness one and I love it's photo's. It has it's use too, but this one is much more complete.

Very useful and lots of background. Maybe could have used a more in-depth section on shopping and eating, but overall helpful. Still better when you buy the separate Fleximap.
