I think I’ve read them all. The peaceful parent. The mindful parent. The connected parent etc... this was my favorite out of all of them. The author gives really great examples of different behaviors and how you can go about them. This is not a book to read if you just want your kids to obey but this is a book if you want to have a real relationship with your kids. There is also a chapter on self care and working on your own past issues. I believe this book has it all. Along with “5 love languages of children” this is all my parenting library needs.

Sarah Ockwell-Smith's book is excellent as it provides not only information concerning why it is necessary to be gentle in disciplining children but demonstrates practical techniques to accomplish this task. She cited Banduras studies on role modelling that is the most important task as a parent and is not easy for those who were not parented well or maltreated as children. This is especially important in discussing the dangers of using corporal punishment. She has a chapter about school discipline which is timely as it is still legal in 19 US states to use corporal punishment, usually paddling on school children, with disastrous results overrepresented in punishing disabled, autistic or minority children. Congress over the last few years has rejected several bills to make this illegal and is currently rejecting a similar bill. I can vouch for the authors skill in advocating for gentle discipline without physical punishment. I have 32 years in this field of child protection and have written articles and a book on the subject. Her book richly deserves 5 stars.

One of the most life changing books I've ever read.

This book offered nothing of use. Your child is crying for your attention-guess what, they need your attention! Your child gets 1 hour of screen time per day and goes over, take time away the next day to make up for it! For lack of a better word, duh! I could not connect with the author at any point in time reading this book and I have read many child development/discipline books over the years. She also claims to have the answers for how to handle large groups of school children, albeit she has absolutely no experience being in the public education sector. This book is complete and utter garbage, but I try to keep as much out of the landfill as possible, so I returned it.

Sarah Ockwell-Smith is a gift to parents, grandparents and all who need to learn more of how to have a positive effect on our children as they grow and face the workings of the social landscape and world!

Simple read. If only every parent would connect and raise their child with gentle discipline!! Children’s needs would be met and the world would be a better place.

Enjoyed reading this book and learning about the Gentle Discipline method. Part of the way into the book we began using some of the techniques with our three year old son and immediately saw benefits. I didn't find all of the proposed techniques as useful or practical (namely, the techniques in either the violence prevention chapter or the parental anger chapter). In addition, I found some of the author's positions on the value of homework to be wildly different from my own experiences growing up. Nevertheless, reading the book on the whole altered our approach to dealing with a misbehaving toddler. My wife and I are glad we read it and will be recommending it to other parents.

Sarah Ockwell-Smith delivers a scientific and empathetic approach to parenting. An interest in shaping people, not just behaviors, out of our children shines through her writing.

I have read just about every Lupus book out there--from memoir to treatise, from books aimed at neophytes to those targeted at the experienced patient. At this point I could probably write one of my own. But I keep reading rather compulsively, hoping to learn something new that will prove helpful. Usually this task proves rather Sisyphean.But I struck gold when I read this book, far and away the most lucid treatment of the disease I have ever read. Anyone who has Lupus should read it, highlighting it as I did on my Kindle. Anyone who cares for, lives with, or loves someone with Lupus should read it. And (unlike other Lupus books) anyone who treats Lupus patients--as a physician or nurse--should also read it. It is jam-packed with tons and tons of very helpful advice and medical information.However, if you do not have any biology background (as I do) you may find certain portions of the book a bit hard to understand. Just skip them. They are not important anyway. The advice sections, which are extensive beyond belief, do not require any knowledge of science and are very clearly written. I do like that Dr. Thomas has not watered down his book as other physicians do, and that he assumes that Lupus patients can choose to read those sections or not.I hope he realizes that by writing this volume, he will empower the Lupus community (which is huge). Armed with an extraordinary amount of his medical advice--some of it granular and some, not--patients can go to their physicians to ask for critical lab tests and game changing medications. Many Lupus patients are not fortunate enough to have access to quality medical care, for one reason or another. This book may further propel them to be their own medical advocates, and substantially improve their health. It is a must-read.

Fabulous book. Very informative, but still readable. Author explains very complex medical information in understandable ways. Lupus is a very illusive, and misunderstood disease, even by most doctors. My wife was finally diagnosed properly 12 years ago, and has received excellent care from a rheumatology specialist who has greatly improved the quality of her life. Unfortunately, she went for another 15 years to doctors who did not recognize her symptoms, and diagnosed her with pretty much everything but Lupus. I wish we would have had a resource like this back then. Become informed, and seek out specialists who undersatnd Lupus and are up to date on state of the art treatments. After reading this book you will know more about Lupus than most of the doctors you see. We had two different doctors tell my wife that she was just depressed, and needed to get out in the sun more - Well, with Lupus, that is the worst thing you can do. Bottom line, educate yourself, and shop wisely for medical care, and this disease can be successfully managed.

I was recently diagnosed with lupus. I had read many books and research papers before getting to The Lupus Encyclopedia. It is my number one 'go-to' resource for my disease. Dr. Thomas has put together a clear, but not dumbed down, resource about lupus and what you need to do to manage it as well as communicate well with your health team. He is up to date with the most current information about treatments and recent new understandings about how the disease works. It's great having it all in one place. I would recommend this book to any one who has the disease or has a loved one with it. Lupus takes a lot of management and understanding the trade off of the decisions you have to make. This is the only book that has actually helped me become a better member of my health team.

AWESOME, AWESOME BOOK!!! I also just ordered this book today for my Parents. EVERYONE with Lupus or any of the other many associated auto immune diseases / disorders should have to read and use as a reference. I brought into my Rheumatologist's when I went in for my Rituxan treatment. They LOVED it and were going to order 1 or 2 to have onsite for patients to use / read while they where there getting any of their numerous treatments. Also, this book is VERY inexpensive for being a 900 page book...unbelievable! I pre-ordered mine in February 2014 and finally received in June 2014...WELL WORTH THE WAIT!!!!!

Having recently been diagnosed with Lupus I needed a resource to help me better understand my condition. This book is filled with information for anyone suffering with Lupus, Fibromyalgia, Hoshimoto's, and various other autoimmune disorders. I love how the author explained the medical side of an autoimmune disease for the lay person to understand. It is very well written and easy to understand. I love the different chapters on medications used to treat lupus, their side effects, as well as their benefits. This is a wonderful book.

Endowing machines with a sense of vision has been a dream of scientists and engineers alike for over half a century. Only in the past decade, however, has the geometry of vision been understood to the point where this dream becomes attainable, thanks also to the remarkable progress in imaging and computing hardware. This book addresses a central problem in computer vision -- how to recover 3-D structure and motion from a collection of 2-D images -- using techniques drawn mainly from linear algebra and matrix theory. The stress is on developing a unified framework for studying the geometry of multiple images of a 3-D scene and reconstructing geometric models from those images. The book also covers relevant aspects of image formation, basic image processing, and feature extraction. The authors bridge the gap between theory and practice by providing step-by-step instructions for the implementation of working vision algorithms and systems. Chap 11 is good, but the rest of the book is very heavy on the math and proofs. Many exercises are to prove something, e.g. ...left as an exercise for the reader. Fundamental concepts get drown out by the mathematics.

Although the mathematical info is relevant, the figures to show results come in low quality.

After going through a computer vision class with a very sub-par textbook, I still did not have a good grasp of epipolar geometry and camera calibration. This book gives a very nice treatment of these subjects.

We used this book at Duke University for our graduate course in 3D reconstruction. It is well written, although sometimes the notation is flawed.

After read the first pages of this book, I found it a littlehard to read, It would be a good idea to read first "IntroductoryTechniques for 3-D Computer Vision" and then this book.

I really liked this book. However, I use it for vision issues as they relate to robotics rather than as an introductory text on 3D vision. If a general or introductory textbook on 3D computer vision is what you desire, then you might be better off with "Multiple View Geometry in Computer Vision" by Hartley or my personal favorite, "Introductory Techniques for 3-D Computer Vision" by Trucco and Verri. For individuals studying robotic vision, many parts of this book are useful not only for characterizing vision, but for putting together algorithms and equations that are useful for describing robotic motion in general. For example, chapter two of the book collects equations and algorithms that are very useful in describing forward kinematics. Chapters five through ten cover all of the considerations and algorithms needed to produce a 3D image from a collection of images taken from different viewpoints. Chapter eleven applies this knowledge with sequential instructions on building a 3D image from a group of images. Chapter twelve has a second application that shows how to perform autonomous control of a moving vehicle via video feedback. The appendices have some very good information on linear algebra as it relates to computer vision as well as details on the Kalman filter, which is also of great interest to those of us who are interested in computational robotics. Algorithms are blocked out and explained in logical steps throughout the book, and it also has very good exercises at the end of each chapter as well as short examples throughout each chapter, although the notation can sometimes be a little confusing. I would therefore recommend this book especially to those readers who are interested in merging their knowledge of robotics with their knowledge of basic computer vision into creating sophisticated applications. However, this book is by no means an introduction to computer vision. This book views the underlying mathematics as the purpose, and the subject of 3D vision as some application; that makes the book hard do read. I am saying that as a PhD in applied mathematics who knows very well the math in the book. The book can rant on and on with pagefuls of formulas and derivations before explaining in a technical language what that means for 3D vision, instead of stating what the problem is, making the case for what needs to be done, and then using the mathematics to get there.This is a good reference book if you already know the subject and want to deepen your knowledge, rather than something you'd use as an entry point into the field of 3D vision.

This is a poor rewrite of a much better book, Multiple View Geometry in Computer Vision, by Hartley & Zisserman. It fails to clarify any of the more difficult concepts presented by Hartley & Zisserman and is far less complete in the treatment of the subject matter. I can not recommend this book when a better written, more thorough treatment is already available from Hartley & Zisserman.
