Not too long ago, our church leadership began to talk about revamping our barely existent missions strategy. As a church plant, we found ourselves taking on the philosophy of our sending church, but not fully convinced that it was right for us.I had heard Mark Dever give tidbits about Capital Hill Baptist Church's missions strategy, but I had yet to see anything in bookform. So, at a workshop with Dever, I asked about missions strategy. He said, "Andy Johnson has just written a phenomenal book on missions and it comes out next month."Well, here it is!It doesn't disappoint. In the book, Johnson is able to diagnose so many of the problems in our churches with regard to missions, and he offers biblical, practical solutions. I purchased a copy for each of my elders and we're using it as a baseline for thinking through missions at our church.I'm so grateful this book is now in print.
It was a good book. I think it helped clear the air on what peoples' perspectives should be toward the local church's role in missions. I appreciated the clarification on short-term missions. Specifically, the encouragement to be wise stewards of the resources God has given us, and to use those resources toward ultimately giving God glory by supporting long-term missions. I walk away with a much greater appreciation for long-term missions. Personally, I do think that there can be value in short-term missions for an individual (for instance, perhaps it's something that sparks an interest in a youth's heart to eventually become a long-term missionary), but I do like Johnson's focus on how things should point toward supporting long-term causes. It gave me a new perspective that I'll have to think about as time progresses. I don't feel quite ready to accept some of the conclusions that were drawn based on some Scriptural passages in regards to missions, but, I admit, this is one of my first times looking into Biblical missions and I'm just starting to explore ecclesiology. So I think I just need to sit down, and study the Scriptural references to see if they can in fact be applied in the way in which they were presented. But, certainly, his logic and reasoning seem well-ironed out, Biblical in nature, and he presented a good case. All in all, an excellent resource. Easy read. Thought-provoking. Great to get insight from a Biblically-based pastor who has a heart for supporting missions through the local church. Thanks for writing, Johnson. It'll be (and already is) helpful to my growth.
A true gem. In this short book, Andy Johnson provides a very practical approach to missions and provides a very helpful way to introduce, train, and maintain missionaries. His main argument is that the local church is central in missions since it is there that the gospel is visibly seen and practiced. Through the local church Christians see God at work in the lives of people. That same ministry is taken abroad to the nations as Christians who have served in their local churches will now be sent out to serve alongside other local churches or plant local churches. Missions revolve​ around the local church and are fueled by the glory of God through the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
This is an excellent book. Johnson starts in the right place with the biblical motivation and foundations for missions (God's glory in the gospel). He then does a great job at describing the importance of supporting those with a biblical methodology of missions. Finally, he gives great practical tips on how to send, support, and train missionaries for helpful partnerships. Buy this book for your Pastor, Missions' Pastor, Missions' Committee, or anyone in the church interested in missions! It's well worth the cost.
As a former missionary, church planter, and pastor of an expat church, this book hits the nail on the head. Directed at church leadership with great insight on the struggles, realities, and practices of missions and mission relations to adopt into the DNA of every church culture. A must read for pastors and church leaders desiring to be the church that God has called us to be. Thank you Andy Johnson for this great book. May God be glorified!
In classic IX Marks fashion, Missions gives Christians a framework and practical advice for how local churches can do Missions in a Biblically faithful manner. All Christians who are concerned with missions and local church should be, at least, familiar with this book.
Very concise and practical look at term missions and what it means biblically and practically lived out. Very encouraging and gives a different perspective than what is held by many churches in our generation.
Excellent book that concisely captures the local church’s role and responsibilities to take the gospel to the nations and to send and support international missionaries. The book is very readable. It is also packed with a wonderful combination of biblical evidence and specific recommendations for churches and church members. It explains the “why?â€, “what?, and “how?†of missions.
