I skated through my teens/college years with relatively great health and a healthy metabolism. Then my 30s hit, I had had 2 kids, and things just slowed down. I'd been lazy about my health all my life so I honestly felt lost when trying to turn things around. I was overwhelmed by where to start. Yes, the obvious like more exercise, better nutrition, but I didn't have the knowledge to know exactly what to do.If you are anything like I am, this book will have some good information for you to mull over and suggestions for you to implement. If you already have a great knowledge base on diet, nutrition and exercise, it may not be as helpful. It is a pretty expansive book, including:Section I: Lifestyle Medicine (Mindfulness and Relaxation Training, Managing Your Stress, Getting Enough Sleep, Nutrition for Life, Sustainable Exercise)Section II: Mind Body Health and Integrative Movement (Yoga for Health, Tai Chi for Health, Qigong for Health, Pilates for Health, Feldenkrais Method* For Health, Alexander Technique for Health)Section III: Rejuvenating Western Exercise and Movement (Practical Exercise Programs and Routines, Exercise Menu and Home Program Guide)Section IV: Self-Care Strategies (Tracking Your Progress, Healing Faster, Improving Your Brain Health, Sustainable Weight Loss Guide, Mind Body Makeover - Message from the Author, Appendix A, B and C and an Index)The book also has a list of exercises pertaining to Warm-Ups, Aerobic, Strength, Flexibility and BalanceHonestly, there is a lot of information inside this book, so if you are needing some guidance it is a good place to start if you DON'T already have a grasp of health and wellness and exercise. The author touches on many different ways to accomplish your health goals, with enough details to get you going and help you see what works best for you. I've tried many different exercises and have surprised myself at how well I like some that I would not normally do. I particularly liked the yoga and pilates sections. The descriptions for the included example exercises were easy to understand with the few included pictures. I do wish there had been more pilates exercises included.I still reference this book, in fact I've got it on my nightstand, with a yoga mat rolled up just under the edge of my bed so I can find extra time throughout the day and take a few minutes to do a few exercises. I find I'm much more relaxed and productive when I do this.

As the introduction states: “Take charge of your personal wellness from the comfort of your own home.”This book is a beginners’ guide to both Eastern and Western approaches to body movement. Written by physical therapist and body trainer Z Altug, it offers choices that you can decide as to what works for your personal needs. It is by no means complete, but it’s a great place to begin developing well-ness in the mind and the body.Combining exercise with such things as herb gardening, diet (nourishing foods), self-massage, yoga, tai chi, qigong and more, it will give the reader many principles to explore in depth.I found it a highly useful book to explore the many possibilities to wellness. The book is somewhat superficial, as one would expect a book covering so many different health methods, it gives a great overview to choosing particulars in one’s wellness journey. Well documented and easy to read.Recommended.

This book offers a smorgasbord introduction to a number of approaches, Eastern and Western, to diet, exercise, and wellness. Some topics it covers better than others, but the idea is to introduce the reader to a number of approaches and techniques that they can explore in order to assist each reader with finding what works well for them. I was delighted to even see herb gardening among the suggested activities for increasing wellness and a happy healthy life alongside more detailed descriptions of yoga, pilates, qi-gong, and Western Circuit training. There are lots of pictures of exercises. They are small but give me a good idea- and the book is well documented throughout, in case you want to go to more comprehensive references that focus on any individual technique. For instance, the book mentions transcendental meditation but says it is beyond the scope of the book to explain it, but it goes ahead and lists several resources in case you want to explore it further. In the section about walking labyrinths and doing finger labyrinths, it doesn't discuss it long or provide examples, but the author provides several website resources. At one, I found some free downloadable labyrinths for doing finger tracings.I would recommend this to anyone thinking about trying to increase their personal health or develop a more comprehensive wellness program. It seems like a must-have book for recreational therapists and personal trainers, too.

What a fantastic book. What separates this one from other self help books is that almost from page 1, it tells you what to do. There are so many books that are full of filler of spend half the book explaining that they are going to tell you what to do and then only a few pages of actual guidance. This one is an instruction booklet from start to finish. I started immediately trying things in there and I felt better almost immediately. For many of the exercises and stretches, there are small pictures so you can make sure you are doing them correctly. This isn't a book to stroke your emotions. It is a book of actions. And if you want to try different therapies but just need someone to tell you how, this is the perfect resource. You don't need to read the whole thing to get started. You can flip through and find treatments, or just do as I did - start from page 1 and just start trying each and find what works best for you.
