I read the "1,000 Gifts" book three times, so thought the devotional might be too familiar. I was wrong ~ each day that I read, I am again moved to a place of gratitude and grace, changing my perspective on whatever challenges I might be facing.
I love most of Ann Voskamp's writings. This devotional book is perfect because each chapter is short and sweet, yet filled with truth and hope. I'll be rereading it multiple times, I'm sure.
This author's work was suggested to me when I was looking for a very particular gift, and I couldn't be more pleased! Voskamp has a way with words; she just pulls the reader right in! Lots of short chapters make for a great read with wonderful message of hope. I need to order another copy for myself!
I reallllllly wanted to like this devotional but I have to be brutally honest, I just do not like Ann Voskamp's writing style. I previously owned the One Thousand Gifts book and, though an avid reader, could not get through it. I sold it and bought the devotional instead with hopes that it'd be more to the point and consicely written. It's not.I know the message is great, I just can't hang in long enough to get to it. :/
This is the most excellent devotional I have ever engaged with. Understand that it is written by a lady who writes a form of "prose-poetry" from her heart!. She has great insight in how to walk with God and know His joy through her own very traumatic and difficult times...and how to walk with Him through the ups and downs of everyday life. If you want to know how to live a joyful life very close to God, read and re-read this devotional every day. She has inspiring wisdom that will eventually touch upon your life...whether you have been, or are going through very difficult life challenges, or dealing with the daily grind. This book is not just for women! As an "older American" ex-military man I have discovered a book I read every day and will continue to do so.
This devotional book quite simply changed my life. Now I have given it to my cousin as she explores her faith more deeply. I am sure it will be as meaningful to her as it was to me--after three years, I still practice writing down three gifts each morning, and my perspective will never be the same.
Ann Voskamp speaks plainly and honestly, which helps break down internal barriers to looking at our own need to expand our thankfulness and to open ourselves to the gift of joy that God is ready to give every moment of every day. These devotions are to be savored, with some days calling to be read two or three times over the course of several days. One pass through this book is unlikely to be enough.Her plain and honest speaking delivers lovely poetic images, too:"I am a bell and He is sure wind, and He moves and I am rung...""...and I chime long" (Devotion 16 "praying grace")
This book has become of our families all time favorites. So much so that we have bought it for several friends and family members as gifts (hence the name). Voskamp is an open pasture of grace-filled wonder and stories that bring great insight and reflection. The Holy Spirit has used this book so much in both me and my wife;s life. We too raise our big family of 6 on a farm- learning obedience to Father through simplicity and patience.
