This is a gorgeous book, not only because it contains Maria Merian's butterfly and plant illustrations but also because it is a visual treat with the additional sidebars, maps, photos and endpages! Sidman also enhances the chapters with her poetry. This was a fascinating topic - I learned so much about Merian and the cycle of a caterpillars. It deserved the Sibert Medal.

I found myself cheering for Maria as she threw off the confines of her gender and time to bring beautiful and important work to science.

Beautiful book great condition

Beautifully illustrated interesting true story. Found out about this person on civilizations a good show on Tv.

Very inspiring for young girls

A biography of artist and self-made naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian, a woman way ahead of her time. This is a decently written biography of Maria Sibylla Merian. If you've never read about this lady who recorded some of the first accurate life cycles of butterflies and moths, as well as frogs, in a time when spontaneous generation was the prevailing scientific theory and women weren't deemed able to do science. She's a fascinating woman. This book is put together in a way very pleasing to the eyes. I read another biography of this amazing woman earlier this year by Sarah B. Pomeroy which I thought was a little bit better. Mostly, I did not like how Sidman instead of just explaining how things were back in Merian's time made judgmental backhanded comments about the time. One of those things that really rubbed me wrong was when she essentially said you've got to excuse Maria for believing in God and mentioning God in her scientific observations because everyone back then believed in God. I think the author should've just stuck to the facts and left her personal opinions about belief in God out of it. Sidman did do a good job of conveying what life was like for a woman in the 17th century and how Maria was so atypical and ahead of her time. So overall a decent and beautiful biography.Notes on content: Some old wood prints of South American slaves and natives show them scantily clad. The process of preserving animals is mentioned.

Nice book.

I have been a nature photographer and sort of an amateur naturalist my entire life and I'm really chagrined to say that until I read this biography I had never heard of its subject: naturalist, writer and artist Maria Sibylla Merian. Merian lived in Germany in the 1600s, was a completely self-taught artist and one of the first naturalists in the world to unravel the secrets of the metamorphosis of caterpillars and butterflies. Lucky for us she was also an amazingly gifted artist. It's easy to forget that during this period of time no one, not even the world's great scientists and naturalists, understood the life cycle of butterflies or moths. In fact, as I learned in this book (one of many, many things I learned), at the time that Merian lived butterflies and most other flying insects were hated--despised--and, if you can believe this, they were almost universally thought to be incarnations of the devil bringing evil into the world (largely because at certain stages in their lives they ruined crops). They were thought to come to Earth through "spontaneous generation" which meant they just appeared from out of nowhere and their appearance was pretty much akin to witchcraft. Wild. This is an absolutely fascinating book that tells in great detail the pursuit of knowledge that a young girl devoted her early life to discovering. Born into a family of engravers and publishers (a lucky break for her and us) and raised in the publishing industry, Merian was able to marry her fascination with nature and butterflies with her natural gifts at drawing. Later in life she was able to merge her natural-history observations and her art talent into publishing. It's an extraordinary story and one that I hope someone will turn into a film. When you read about the social obstacles that Merian had to overcome in the 1600s (women were not allowed to study in universities and were expected only to tend to their family's needs) to get her ideas and her beautiful art out into the world, it's amazing that she had the courage and devotion to not let her dreams die. This is a great story for any young woman (or young man) today to read if they are pursuing their own dreams and they think they are on a tough road. The latter part of the book goes into Merian's very adventurous travels as an adult (trips that sadly eventually led to her death) and those chapters are almost swashbuckling in their scope. Just fascinating is all I can say.Joyce Sidman has done a spectaculr job at researching Merian's life and, as a writer myself, I'm staggered by the amount of time she must have spent researching this book. I can't imagine tackling such a complex challenge. I learned about so many different things in reading the book: Merian's life, the life cycle of butterflies and, of course, the history of printing and engraving in the 17th Century. If I have any criticism in reading this book, it's that you get the feeling you're reading several books rolled into one: a biography, a history of printing, a book about the life cycle of butterflies and a book on insect natural history. To be honest, that approach gets a little bit overwhelming and a tad confusing at times (I asked myself a few times, which story is she trying to tell?), but each aspect is interesting and you can sort them out if you accept that, by necessity, these stories need to overlap. I think that for this reason, however, the book will appeal more to a slightly older audience--perhaps middle school and high school. No high school student will get bored with the book, I'm certain. As a slight side note, one of the devices that the author used in titling chapters that I liked a great deal was naming them after the various "instars" or phases of a catepillar's life. Because the subject of the book was fascinated by these phases and was in a lifelong quest for knowledge about them, using these instars or phases in the chapter names draws you into the journey with Merian. A really great idea, it totally worked for me. There is also a good short glossary at the start of the book that's quite helpful, as well as many sidebars that explain things as seemingly diverse and disjointed (they're not) as religion in the 1600s, slavery in Surinam and witchcraft. (As I said, a multi-faceted book, lol.)Finally, the book is stunningly illustrated by both historic illustrations and engravings and lots and lots of illustrations by Merian. There are also many photos by the author.I don't believe I've ever read such a complex and interesting Y/A (young adult) book or learned so much from one relatively short book. I hope that adults will read this book and not see it as a "kid's book" because in scope, intelligence and content it is the equal of any natural history book and biography. I really can't say enough great things about this book and it's the kind of book that you'll read several times and pull new things from on each reading. I've already ordered two copies of this book as gifts and I'm sure I'll order more.
